My mom did enjoy Lucy but not enough to ever see it ever, ever again.
I loved Lucy and have been tempted to see it a second time. To me, Lucy was truly amazing and it didn't hurt that it had a random scene of dinosaurs. Random dinosaurs can improve almost anything.
Anyways, Lucy was like this thought provoking exercise of how much could our minds and bodies be capable of if we were able to really push the boundaries of what it could be capable of. How much of our limitations are actually self-imposed because everyone says we can't?
However, it was exploring all these scientific questions with an incredible, enormous amount of violence. It was as if Quentin Tarantino directed an episode of "Cosmos"...which I think would be awesome.
Then, of course, it starred Scarlett Johansson so it was like a Black Widow movie where she gains the Scarlet Witch's powers before ultimately becoming Quasar.
I was trying to describe it to a friend and they thought it sounded like "a ghetto version of Transcendence".
*facepalm*
I know it was originally going to star Angelina Jolie and I know that would have worked for the ass-kicking but not the actual story. The whole point of why it's so awesome and miraculous that Lucy is able to achieve what she does is that she is young physically but especially mentally. She's still in school in her middle 20s, but she has no respect for herself and surrounds herself with those that won't make her change that. I'm not sure Jolie would have pulled that off.
Okay, there were some plot holes but some of what my mom thought were plot holes were things she didn't understand until I explained it for her. Still, plot holes and mistakes...the biggest one that stood out for me were the Iroquois clothing being completely wrong. However, when she was in early New York, I couldn't help hoping that Jeremy Renner would show up in his Immigrant garb.
I actually wondered what this would be like in 3D because some of the shots are that amazing...and apparently shot with Imax cameras.

Date: 2014-08-21 06:49 am (UTC)This is probably going to sound like a silly thing to ask but I've had it come up in movies that I'd never suspect it would, is there any rape/attempted rape in the movie?
Am sorry if me asking is uncomfortable

Date: 2014-08-25 02:13 am (UTC)I think there might even be a name for it.
I remember scenes that I squirmed in fear of what I thought might happen, but I don't recall anything actually happening...unlike Maleficent which gave me the heebiejeebies with its rape scene.
However, let me double-check for you since it's important.
No, there is no rape; not the act or implied rape or the after effects, nothing.
And stay away from Maleficent.

Date: 2014-08-25 02:44 am (UTC)Still, it proves a viable action film starring a woman doesn't need to be based on a previous entity or starring Angelina Jolie.
While they called themselves progressive, Marvel gives us quite the run around. First, they wanted to see how well the Peggy Carter one-shot would do. Now, they vary between wanting to know how well the Peggy Carter show will do or the pressures of having to fit into their busy schedule of Phase 3...
What utter bullshit.
I also hate when people complain that Lucy is darker than a Marvel film. If Feige and Quesada were truly adament about comic films being able to be any genre, then some characters demand a darker, R-rated film. I would love for a dark, R rated Black Widow film where Natasha truly has to fight her demons of who she tries to be and who she used to be. However, I think she might be considered too kid-friendly now for that.

Date: 2014-08-25 05:04 am (UTC)I thankfully saw an article right after Maleficent was released so managed to skip it since I really had no idea until someone wrote about it.
It is so common in movies now, hell it's even in frickin' AoS which makes me sad as all hell. There needs to be a site where people can check games and movies for questionable content since 85% of the time the people reviewing don't mention it.
Thanks again.
