“Iefan Jones,” Jack answered without thinking, “Nine pounds and thirteen ounces, just now. It was a little too much for me.”
Although if Jack was here, it would be obvious that he died.
“Thank you,” Ianto said, happier than he’d ever seen him in life and kissed him again.
Jack held him close and his hands traveled down his back to his butt which he squeezed through the trouser fabric. His husband peppered his neck with kisses and sucked on his earlobe.
“As much as I’d like to continue this,” Ianto spoke after stopping, “I don’t know how long it takes you to come back from birth complications and we have things to talk about.”
He knew his face was full of disappointment.
The young man took both his hands and looked into his blue eyes as he told him, “I want you to take him to Rhi. I know you might have to make up a story, like you adopted him, but I want my sister to know our son.”
Jack nodded because not only would he do anything Ianto asked, but Rhi had wanted him to come back without even knowing about the baby. She was his sister-in-law now.
“Anything else?” he inquired while wanting to remember this forever.
“Gwen and Martha should know about Iefan, too,” the Welshman replied and Jack smiled; thinking about how the doctor already knew.
“Martha wore her uniform to your funeral, complete with the cap,” he explained and Ianto grinned as well.
“We put our cap to a lot of good use,” he pointed out and his blue eyes sparkled.
“I love you,” Jack said before he could forget again.
“I love you, too,” Ianto agreed and his hands were the ones roaming Jack’s body, stopping on his abdomen that was already taut as though he had never been pregnant at all.
“Go lower,” Jack suggested and after a glare, he did.
Just as he was going to scream Ianto’s name, he woke up. However, the second of being disappointed was quickly replaced by Iefan. Where was he? His blue eyes scanned the room; full of foliage under a fake moonlit sky, but containing a garden seat, fountain and then, he saw the Doctor in a rocking chair with the green bundle.
“Well, look at that, your dad’s finally awake,” the Time Lord remarked and stood up, Jack thought about going to him yet he still felt a bit sore, “and he’s learned a valuable lesson about babies being able to scratch holes in their daddy’s stomach with their very sharp toenails. Yes, he did.”
The baby voice being used made him smile even if it was describing how he had just died and the Doctor passed him the bundle. Another chirp filled the air from the other’s mobile. It was the one that meant a voice message had been left.
“Just go ahead and answer that, we’ll be fine,” Jack spoke as he looked at his son. Iefan was sleeping and he laid three fingers on his chest to feel it rise and fall.
“Seventeen missed calls with five messages, which seems like a lot,” the Time Lord commented as he punched buttons and the other would have agreed if he was paying more attention. Instead, he was only half-listening as he studied the little face. His features seemed to resemble Ianto’s, but he’d read that babies were supposed to look like their father for the first year or so. It was some sort of genetic encouragement for the father to take more interest in their offspring.
Not that your father would have needed anything of the sort, Jack thought and smiled at the sleeping form.
“That’s odd, you left me a message…”
“How could I do that when I was sort of busy today?” he asked without looking up.
“And Sarah Jane and Wilf and Gwen and Ianto Jones,” the Doctor listed off and Jack snapped his head up, “Something about a 456.”
”Ianto?” he uttered and held out his right hand while keeping Iefan in his left arm. After a jolt from his sonic screwdriver, the Time Lord gave the mobile over.
“Doctor, this Ianto Jones. I don’t have much time. They’re watching us, but we could really use your help,” said those Welsh vowels and the automated voice came up. He brought up the main screen of the phone and compared it with the date on his watch. The watch said it was 5:04 AM on February 23, 2010 while the Doctor’s phone said it was 5:04 AM on June 4, 2009. He’d been living all this time in the past.
“We could stop it. We could stop the 456, you’re good with aliens. He doesn’t die for twelve more hours, we could save them…”
“You want us to change time lines for your boyfriend?” the Time Lord questioned with a frown.
“Husband, he’s my husband,” Jack corrected and the other’s face softened. The former leader of Torchwood didn’t care anymore that he married him afterwards. It still counted and he was through explaining himself. With a sigh, the Doctor crossed his arms and slumped against the blue walls of the TARDIS.
“Jack, you know the consequences of changing time lines as well as I do. Yes, we could go there right now and Ianto and Steven wouldn’t have to die, but that means that other things are changed forever as well; Different people might die, others will never meet and some will never be born,” he explained and as he said those last five words, he was looking directly at the bundle in the new parent’s left arm. His meaning was unmistakable. Jack could have his husband and grandson back, but his son would never exist. He gazed at the infant with its tiny fingers and soft dark hair. Remembering how happy Ianto was when he told him about Iefan’s birth, he knew what choice he’d make and Jack couldn’t bear not to make to make the same one. He loved this boy too much already.
“Do you still want to stop it?” asked the Doctor in a soft voice and he shook his head. The Time Lord took his mobile back, hesitated for a second and headed out of the room. At the threshold, he stopped and looked back at him saying, “I’m sorry, Jack, but he is gorgeous, isn’t he?”
His eyebrows motioned towards the baby and Jack nodded. Then, he gazed back at his son who had woken up and was staring at him with bright blue eyes.
“Hello, Iefan, I’m your papa, the one who’s been talking to you all these months. I hope you’re not disappointed,” he whispered as the tiny hands tried to grasp at air, “Oh, and don’t get attached to the beard. I will shave it…eventually.”
