Oh gosh, I never did tell you properly about Snowpiercer.

I could probably write many, long essays on all the nuances of Snowpiercer; its perfect cast, its superb script, the beautiful cinematography...everything was just so...perfect. There are only 1-3 times a year that I fall in love so utterly with a film and it's so rare that I'm completely sucked into that world especially with a film that I know nothing about beforehand.

On one level, you have an awesome action film with massive fights scenes and enough blood to make you think it was a Tarantino film. On another level, you have metaphor upon metaphor about whether humans are simply cogs in someone else's machine or can they break free? Can the system be changed?

I am purposely being vague. Part of the joy of Snowpiercer was discovering this new world and all its secrets; not only what makes it tick but the character motivations.

Not everyone liked or understood the ending, but I adored it. My mom didn't have much hope for the future of humanity in it.

I normally hate Dystopias but everything was just so awesome. Mom and I toyed with letting the nephews watch it on Netflix but they'd only really understand half of what was going on.

I was actually saddened when I picked up the original novels and they didn't have any of my favorite film characters.

Again, the cast is awesome. The lead is Chris Evans with Jamie Bell as his second in command. Yes, that would mean its the former Johnny Storm with the current Ben Grimm. Plus, there's Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton and Alison Pill!!!! Yes, it's like a reunion of everyone who's ever worked with Tom Hiddleston, hehe. It's too bad that Chris Evans never had any actual scenes with Alison Pill in Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I am also getting a little tired of John Hurt. It still feels like he's in everything and I'm still annoyed by his Shakespeare remarks. He's free to make them and I'm free to find them snobbish.

PS Can Marvel please cast Song Kang-ho and Go Ah-sung? PLEASE?????

The only thing I didn't like about the ending of the movie (spoilers for those reading comments) was that Chris Evans' character losing his arm felt to me like some big redeeming moment where from then on he could live with a clear conscience and be the leader he was supposed to be... but instead he dies a minute later. lol.

To me, this felt like one of two things...

1. While he's now became equal with everyone else, he's still a cog in the machine. Can he truly change anything when everything else went according to plan?

Often, the hope can only lie in the young because the adults have become too jaded and cynical to enact real change. Namgoong dies, too. The adults dying so the young can live which could have also been mirrored by the earlier deaths of Tanya and others.

2. The Frodo Ending

Obviously, it's far older and wider in scope than that, but Frodo seems easiest. Frodo loses a finger on Mount Doom but secures a better tomorrow for Middle Earth and later, the Shire. However, between his PTSD and/or personal demons...he can't go on. I do wonder whether Curtis would have ever been able to fully let go within himself of the grief and personal responsibility that he felt over losing Edgar and all those others. Whereas the kids were more innocent and without all that baggage.
