My mom and I saw this question on a party game box:

If you could have any deceased musician come back for a concert, who would it be?

At first, it sounds so overwhelming even if we are to assume ground rules like not including people who sang occasionally like Phil Hartman or being able to assume they would be in their prime as opposed to their condition right before they died. Plus, it's singular so we can't bring back enough people to have Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Beatles.

By that night, my mom already had her answer. As Caucasians, I think there is one answer we're expected to say and she admitted this. "I know I'm supposed to say Elvis but I have to say Jimi Hendrix."

Hendrix is such a good answer but then, this is every musician EVER, you know? All 2,000+ years of music.

So, I've thought about and...

10. Jim Morrison
9. Buddy Holly
8. Patsy Cline
7. Scatman Crothers
6. Ritchie Valens
5. Hank Williams
4. Robert Johnson
3. Sarah Bernhardt
2. Ludwig van Beethoven

Yeah, I decided she was right.

1. Jimi Hendrix

So, what's your choice?

WOW, tough choice.
Gotta admit, I would lean towards Elvis in his prime. :)
Possibly Janis Joplin. :)
Would love the chance to see Laura Branigan again. Taken too soon. :o
How to choose one? :o :o :o
Hugs, Jon

Bob Marley. Hands down.

Unless I was being selfless and then either John Denver or Ricky Nelson for my mom. I would have liked to seen Denver in concert, myself.

Or Adam 'MCA' Yauch. Oh man, one last Beastie Boys concert would be something.

Freddy Mercury!

And because the chicks are under-represent, Janis Joplin. Oh, wait, Karen Carpenter, what a voice.

For some reason this reminded me of a Stephen King story, You Know They Got a Hell of a Band. :)

Have to say Freddie Mercury, too. Non-musicians? Carl Sagan; hands down.

My mom was also a big fan of Ricky Nelson back in the day, but watching his videos on Youtube makes it totally understandable...VERY CUTE!

Actually, he almost made my cut.

Although Bob Marley is good choice as well and also almost made the cut.

I never used to be into the Grateful Dead. Nobody I knew was into them. Then, they had this episode of Freaks & Geeks where one character said they wished they could wipe American Beauty from their mind...just so they could listen to the album again for the first time. It was such a powerful statement that it made me think that I was missing something. They are an awesome band and a great antidote to some of the more cynical music.

I really considered them, but I didn't want to put females just to have females. Janis...her singing is okay but I actually enjoy her stories more. I'd rather have her for a dinner and talk for hours.

Karen is good but not...wow whereas Patsy always blows me away when I hear her.

Of course, it's sad right there that Patsy and the names you mentioned are all after 1950. That's the other problem with females. They weren't really respected before then. Most people could only name a handful or less.

I'm not sure how many historians, much less normal folk, know who Sarah Bernhardt is. I love early film history and part of my alma mater was a Victorian hotel where one of the guests had been...Sarah Bernhardt! She had also performed on the property. I loved to try and pretend what it must have been like.

I'm going to have to resist with non-musicians or I'd be here all day.

His friends all said that the music he improvised was way more beautiful than his published works...
