Okay, I've had two people ask me what the deal was with Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner apologizing so...

This is what happened:
http://profeminist.tumblr.com/post/117198169192/tw-for-slut-shaming-ableism-chris-evans-and

Yeah, I know this kind of thing is why I can't get on board the Feminist band wagon but...

I've totally called Black Widow a slut before. I've called Hawkeye a slut even more times than that...the guy can't keep it in his pants whatsoever. Do I mean it as judgement? No, it's just part of their character.

Plus, this is Renner, the guy who referred to Jennifer Lopez' breasts to her face on national television. He has worse foot in mouth disease than Joe Biden.

Also, I felt there was way worse stuff for Tumblr to get mad at. This appears to be the same interview or the same day because same outfits:
http://nathansfillions.tumblr.com/post/117390837748/i-think-i-might-have-no-career-after-this

Renner immediately acknowledges he's done wrong by saying, "I think I might have no career after this.” I think it's Evans that surprised everyone with a fratboy mentality so unlike Rogers. However, let's take a look...

First of all, they joke about animal cruelty...namely, killing a cat.

Then, they joke that they will make Black Widow do everything. Honestly, this seems fair since she's the most capable of the Avengers BUT...
Evans is speaking with the yellow portion of the transcript. He's the one to say, "Just to watch her fail."

What part of hacking into Hammer Industries, helping to figure out how to stop an alien device, tracking down a specific HYDRA signal, etc. would make a person think that she wouldn't be capable at ANY electronic device, including a TV?????

That pissed me off way worse than the whore comment.

Robert Downey, Jr. also took a pass for making a racist remark about Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3055271/Robert-Downey-Jr-sparks-controversy-accused-making-racist-remark-Oscar-winning-Mexican-director.html

Honestly, it feels like "whore" and "slut" remarks were the least of it yet that's what the internet chose to make them apologize for.

Perversely, what annoys me most from all of those links you've posted is the way Krishnan Guru-Murthy treated RDJ. I hate the word 'trigger' and the way it's over/mis-used but, in Tumblr terms, that's exactly what happened. RDJ has pulled himself out of a sewer that, a few years ago, looked like it was going to finish him off. In whose interest is it to try to make him relive it on TV?

The other thing was tit-for-tat -- Inarritu said superhero films are offensive right-wing crap, RDJ offensively said that Inarritu's opinion is crap.

It's a little more grey with me.

The United States tends to write off anyone who's had a problem with drugs at any point. Once you're an addict, it's just assumed you'll die an early death and not amount to anything.

This is what makes it even more important to have examples like RDJ and Jason Mewes. People who looked like they were headed down that path, that there was no turning back but they made it, My oldest nephew never even heard of this stuff until we alluded to it a year or so ago.

There is a caveat...RDJ and Mewes are blessed to be in the entertainment industry who is a LITTLE more lenient and blessed with friends who never stopped caring about them...and also have jobs and money. Not everyone has that and not everyone who has that still makes it...but it does make it more likely for a person to be successful.

Mewes is completely open with his story. RDJ USED to be. There used to be a thing called reporting where people looked for patterns or what happened before. RDJ had an interview with Sam Jones in 2013 where they discussed his past with drugs and RDJ was fine with it.

Last year, RDJ was on Charlie Rose with his The Judge co-stars. He discussed his past BUT Rose wanted his thoughts on Indio's troubles relating to his own.

Rose is a professional. His career spans literally decades. He has interviewed dictators, murderers, you name it...but I've never seen someone attempt to murder Rose with his eyes the way RDJ did when Indio was bought up. He almost walked off that set, too.

Obviously, it hurts. I can't imagine what pain that must be to know first-hand the hell your kid is going through but it's Indio that's the difference now, not that he suddenly decided not to talk about it or that those interviewers are just dicks for bringing it up.

I pray for him and hope that he does have someone he feels comfortable discussing it with away from prying eyes.

To me, it sounded like RDJ was insulting Inarritu as being a foreign born, ESOL speaker which didn't sit well with me. Just because someone grew up with a different language doesn't make their opinion less valid or mean their English skills should be remarked on as being so excellent. That's a back-handed compliment as though Spanish speakers should only know grade-school English.

But I still haven't seen the full quote and context of Inarritu anywhere which is very annoying.

Honestly, I don't think the internet was over-reacting to "whore" or "slut." They're deragatory terms society has used exclusively towards women, even if it's a descriptive word you use personally for fun on fictional characters. We do have a problem with women (fictional or otherwise) being portrayed as sexual objects in the media. People are going to pick up on that when you're talking about Black Widow, the only female superhero on the Avengers team.

I agree with you there.

No I'm OK with raking them across the coals for the slutshaming. I'm really goddam tired of women being called whores for acting like men do. Maybe some people call men whores too, but it's not systemic the way calling women whores is.
