Jack fastened the ends of the string together to form a necklace and put it around his head. The Doctor watched while wearing a frown.
“I thought you were ready to come back. Why are you using a perception filter?” asked the Time Lord. He put on the baby carrier and double-checked that he done it correctly before setting Iefan inside.
“As usual, you parked on the Plass,” he replied and when the Doctor continued to stare with those brown eyes, “Torchwood, I don’t want them to know about him yet.”
“You can’t run away from them forever,” he uttered in a soft voice, more like his old self than he had been in awhile.
“I thought you didn’t like Torchwood,” Jack reminded him and the other grimaced, putting his hands in his pockets.
“I did, I still do in some respect, but…,” he explained, “If I had a choice between someone like Yvonne who exploited the planet and universe in any way she could and someone like you who would save the planet no matter the personal cost…I’d rather have you in charge.”
Jack shook his head.
“No, I don’t want it,” he said, putting on his coat and didn’t care that he sounded like a cranky toddler. Then, after picking up the car seat, he left before the other could say anything else. There was no desire to see what was below him. Gwen should be doing fine. Instead, he walked to the car park and found his vehicle withwhat seemed like a metre of dust covering it.
“That’s odd,” he remarked and went about strapping the car seat in. After fifteen minutes, he sighed and reminded himself, “I can fix the TARDIS, this should be no problem.”
Finally, he fixed it so there was nothing loose and it seemed to be the way it was supposed to go. He did have to admit that maybe he should purchase a different car, but there was nothing like the wind whipping through your hair. It was the closest thing to flying he could manage in recent times.
“This is even more fun than riding in a spaceship, Iefan, you’ll love it,” he said, kissing his son’s forehead. They drove to Newport to visit St Woolos first. The government had given Steven one of the white crosses, like the soldiers received. He had to admit he was relieved that it wasn’t some large, gaudy monstrosity with a statue. Jack wiped the dirt off the stone and noticed plastic poppies were stuck into the ground. Curiosity filled him as he wondered who had put them there. Where was Alice at this point? Was she still in France?
“I’m sorry, Steven, but..Ianto says you’re...happy, that you’re both happy up there. You have an uncle now, a real one. His name is Iefan Jones and you would have liked him,” Jack spoke and traced the name before walking away.
Ianto’s grave was in a different section. He rubbed the dirt off it as well and smiled at the “Husband” inscribed. A small container of coffee was lying against the stone.
“I’m sorry, Ianto. I’m trying, but it’s hard without you here. The Doctor tries to help, but…but he’s not you,” he spoke and traced his lover’s name as well. Iefan looked up at him with wide blue eyes and he had to smile. He was the one good thing in his life right now.
“Uncle Jack!” screamed a voice behind him and he turned his head. A girl with long brown hair was running towards him and he had no idea why. Not only did she not look familiar, but more importantly, he was wearing a perception filter which very few could see through.
“I don’t think I know you,” he said in an apologetic tone to the girl with brown eyes.
“But it’s me, Mica,” she complained and he shook his head.
“No, Mica’s a little girl,” he argued yet a worried look came over his face. What if he hadn’t come back when he thought?
“I used to be,” the girl explained, “When you came to visit six years ago.”
Oh no, that’s not what he had planned at all.
“Six years…” Jack repeated, rubbed his face with his hands and then turned his whole body to face her. Until then, she hadn’t been able to see Iefan. Now, her mouth gaped in surprise and she hurried the rest of the way to see him closer. Her brown eyes met the baby’s light blue ones. Then, he squealed. The sound echoed through the trees and stones and he loved it. It was odd that he used to find the sound so disconcerting when other children made it. Iefan smiled at his cousin and an odd expression came over her face. She must have recognized something.
“Your mum’s going to kill me,” Jack muttered and she brightened.
“My brother! He looks just like my brother when he was a baby!” she said and reached in her pocket for her mobile, “I have it on here for blackma…I mean, as a good sister, look!”
She gave him the mobile which contained more of a close-up than the photo of Ianto and his nephew was. This was getting worse and worse. If it wasn’t bad enough that he had been away for six years, she’d be upset over the baby. There was no way Rhi wouldn’t notice the similarity if her daughter did and Rhi was more likely to know who Iefan really looked like. He sent the photo to his mobile.
“My mum would totally freak over it, that’s just odd,” she remarked, “Is this why you were gone so long? Because you were adopting?”
Hadn’t Ianto suggested that as an option? Now, that didn’t seem possible. He just couldn’t get over something that was supposed to be simple yet went so wrong.
“No, I never meant for this to happen. I thought this would be July 13, 2010, she said it would be,” Jack spoke, almost to himself as one hand rested on the baby’s back. The TARDIS had never lied to him before.
“Well, it’s August 14, 2015,” she told him and he cringed before handing the mobile back, “What’s the name?”
“Iefan,” he replied and smiled as he tended to do when talking about his son, “He is four months and twenty days.”
The baby squealed again and formed a grin that was beginning to take after his.
“Are you going to come home with me then?” the girl asked and with a hopeful expression and he sighed that he’d have to quash it. As much as he wanted to go home with her, he wasn’t ready to face Rhi since the adoption story would not work.
“I need to sort some things out first,” the man spoke, “but I will…it was good to see you.”
She hugged his side and he left before she could ask him anything else.
Jack couldn’t help slamming the door behind him as he entered the TARDIS. The Doctor looked up from his book at the sound.
“Something happen?” the Time Lord questioned and pushed the glasses up that had fallen down his nose.
“She lied to me!” he hissed and kicked the corner console, “How could you do that?”
There was a sound that could have been the mechanical equivalent of a raspberry. He raised his fist and felt the Doctor grab him from behind.
“Jack, at least give me Iefan to hold while you try to destroy my ship,” he spoke and Jack handed over the baby who promptly vomited down the front of the suit. A belch escaped his mouth and then, he laughed.
“Well, at least it’s only on the coat,” the Time Lord commented and stripped it off, laying it on the chair.
Jack thought about kicking it again except his foot really hurt from the first time.
“She said that it would be July 13, 2010 and it’s not. It’s August 14, 2015! Almost six whole years and I told them I’d be back,” he complained except he hadn’t. Rhi had wanted him to come back, but he never gave her an actual answer.
“Well, I told Martha,” he spoke although he hadn’t told her that either. He’d never promised anyone except Ianto. The TARDIS wasn’t speaking to him at the moment.
“Coward,” he whispered and turned back to the Doctor in the chair with Iefan, “Has she ever lied to you before?”
The other man seemed to ponder this as he kept touching Iefan’s nose and making him laugh while trying to grab the larger hands.
