“I don’t recall her ever lying to me,” the Doctor answered which sounded suspicious, “but she does do things without my knowledge, like flying to the end of the universe to escape you and going to…to Messaline.”

His voice was different on the last two words and he was only looking at Iefan.

“What happened on Messaline?” Jack asked although not fully expecting an answer.

“Nothing, Martha, Donna and I had a wonderful time,” the Time Lord replied as he made silly faces at the baby.

“The fact that you can’t even look at me right now makes me doubt that greatly,” the other man pointed out and the Doctor sighed, letting his guard down long enough for Iefan to steal his glasses. Even more disturbing was when he made no move to take them back.

“Messaline had an extrapolator machine for taking tissue samples from humans…”

“They were growing their own army,” he interrupted with a guess and the Doctor nodded, “I’ve heard about such things, but never actually seen it.”

The Doctor clutched the baby close in a way he had done so many times before when he felt weak. Iefan always gave him strength and it looked that way for the other man as well.

“They took some from me, Jack. They weren’t just creating clones. They had a way of recombining the DNA to make a new person,” he uttered in the silence surrounding them, “I had a daughter. Her name was Jenny and she was perfect. Donna named her. She even had two hearts.”

Jack had noticed the past-tense.

“What happened?”

“There was a war. We saved them, but…I couldn’t save her. She was shot,” he explained as Iefan sucked on his glasses, “She had two hearts, but it didn’t work. She didn’t regenerate.”

He’d mentioned Donna so this would have happened in just the last couple of years. His own problems with the time gap didn’t seem so bad. Jack leaned over and hugged him from the back. Then, he took the glasses out of his son’s mouth and wiped the drool off before giving them back to The Doctor. It was no state in which to leave him so he postponed moving back to Cardiff for a few more weeks.

However, when he did start preparations in earnest, his babyproofing was interrupted by Mica at the door. It was clear that she was trying to learn all she could about her uncle. He wondered if she had tried to sneak into Torchwood yet and that made him think of when Ianto had stalked him for a job.

“I think your cousin is taking after your daddy,” he said to Iefan who sat in his lap, drinking his bottle.

Jack was curious how her mum was taking her activities because there was no way Rhi didn’t know what her daughter was up to. He also knew he didn’t want to think about when Iefan was old enough to make his own decisions. What if he wanted to join Torchwood as his parents had?

“Sometimes, Iefan, I wish you could stay like this forever,” he admitted and the baby looked at him while sucking on his bottle.

However, Mica had also revealed that he’d lost nine more months and the government was lying about Ianto’s death. It made him alternate between wanting to throttle someone and wanting to cry about his husband being forgotten. At least, he no longer worried about keeping his promise of remembering him because he knew that for the rest of his life, his deaths would never be spent alone in the darkness again. Ianto would be there with open arms. Iefan took the empty bottle from his mouth and held it out for Jack to take.

“Are you all done?” he asked after taking the bottle. The baby burped in response and he grinned. After putting the empty bottle in the sink, he picked up his mobile and sat back down in the recliner again with Iefan. It had only been six and a half years, would it still work?

He scrolled down his numbers and clicked on one.

“Jack!” exclaimed the voice of Martha Milligan in his ear, “I thought I might never hear from you again.”

“Voice of a Nightingale,” he greeted back, “I didn’t mean for it to be so long. When can we meet?”

“Depends on where we’re meeting,” she replied.

“It’ll have to be my house here in Cardiff,” Jack stated, “because no one else knows I’m back yet…except for Ianto’s niece and that was a weird coincidence.”

“Hmm, tonight’s sort of late already,” Martha said and he looked at his own watch where it was 6:30 in the evening. She was right. Iefan should have his bath and bedtime soon.

“However,” she continued, “I should have all of tomorrow off, would that work for you?”

“Perfect,” he agreed, “11 AM?”

Iefan chose that moment to squeal as loudly as possible.

“Great,” Martha confirmed, “because I can hear why you left and I have a surprise for you, too.”

She hung up before he could ask about it. Being a married person for almost seven years, it was perfectly plausible that they’d have at least one of their own by now. Then, he realized how he didn’t know whether Gwen had a girl or a boy or maybe she had both at this point. Everyone’s life would have gone on without him.

“I love you,” he said and kissed Iefan on the cheek, “I hope you always remember that.”

In the morning, he waited with excitement for that knock on the door with his son on his knee.

“Oh no, here’s the asteroid field,” he told him and moved his legs so the five month old bounced up and down. Iefan shrieked with happiness. Jack felt so alive that it was hard to believe there was a point last summer when he didn’t care about anything. Then, there was knocking at the door.

“Martha Milligan,” he greeted with a grin and Iefan in one arm. For a few seconds, there was a forced chuckle that he didn't understand.

“Captain Jack Harkness,” she spoke with her own smile and a little girl in one arm, “So, can we come in?”

“Of course,” he answered and gave her the space to do so before shutting the front door. They set the kids on the floor and watched them study each other. Iefan sat with wide blue eyes and a toothless mouth that was gaped open. The girl went for the more direct approach of walking over to him as though he were a pet.

“Baby!” she exclaimed and pointed. She took after Martha except with darker skin. The toddler wore a red shirt and jean shorts with her hair done up with barrettes.

“That’s right, Mariah. He’s...he's?" Martha asked, looking towards Jack for confirmation of the sex and he nodded, "he's a baby.” He wasn't sure how she was able to guess since he had skipped clothes entirely for Iefan although he supposed it was a 50/50 chance of choosing right.

“So, how old is Mariah?” he asked Martha.

“Eighteen months,” she said with the proud grin of a parent, “Mariah Jane Smith."
Smith was definitely not Milligan. He gave her a quizzical expression and she sighed.

"Tom and I...it didn't last. After a year or so, we drifted apart and by that time, Mickey was doing well as a free-lancer, well enough that he took me on as a partner. After the divorce was settled, we were partners in other ways," she explained, "When we got married, I was already a month gone with her...just didn't know it at the time. Now, tell me his name and everything.”

He needed a short moment to process all of that.

“Iefan Jones, five months and ten days,” Jack answered with his own proud smile, “I never thought of giving him a middle name though. I don’t have one and neither did Ianto.”

She shrugged and commented, “If he wants one later, he could always come up with it himself.”

They watched them a minute or two longer as Mariah sat and tried to smooth his unruly blond hair that seemed to be developing a mind of its own.

“Mariah, let me see Iefan now,” Martha spoke and picked the baby up, “Oh gosh, Jack, put a suit and tie on him and he looks just like his dad except for the hair color.”

“I know; it’s one of the only things he gets from me,” Jack acknowledged, “But I like seeing so much of his daddy in him. Sometimes, it feels so unbelievable that he’s even here that I like the proof that he’s from Ianto and me; that our love made him.”
