Sorry, I was in a hurry and only skimmed your para. My Eowyn uses a quarter-staff, but hers and Rey's look rather different ;-)
Thinking more about it -- and I've only seen the film once, so I may be misremembering -- it's when Ren says she's good but needs training (implying that he could take her on as an apprentice) that she defeats him, so there could have been some mind-invasion on her part going on, but would that make her any less tough? I think the whole scenario's designed to contrast his weakness with her strength.
