What does everyone think? Is The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt racist or does it simply push the boundaries to expose how political correctness could be ridiculous?
I think that Tina Fey and the other writers are far to self aware and nothing they write is by accident so, no I don't think the show is racist. I think they are mostly poking fun at pop culture/media and how they treat race in entertainment.
Though I feel like they have been a little more careful in the second season, but I'm only halfway through so far so who knows!
Absolutely. I'm not saying the show is flawless or doesn't need to be critiqued, by any means. I do read it as more tone deaf than meanspirited, I guess.
A lot of this show's humor is in the realm of satire, and so it can seem really offensive sometimes to people who aren't as familiar with that genre of humor/writing. I haven't seen much of this season, but I saw the first season, and I get more of the impression they're more shining a light on the prejudices and such that actually exist in society, in a humorous way, than that they're actually racist as a show - but that's just this straight white woman's perception of it.
