ericadawn16: (Surprise)

It turns out that I forgot to post about Halloween and I didn't realize this until I was getting read for May's Free Comic Book Day two weeks ago.

I'm not sure why except November and December are always crazy busy. I did love Halloween. I was Kate Bishop and Green Shift comics recognized my costume!

They were the only ones so that made my day.

Halloween Comic Book Day

Free Comics:

Actionverse
MOLLY DANGER!!!
Also, I still need to check out Nutmeg and they also had an ad for a comic, Herald: Lovecraft & Tesla where HP Lovecraft and Nikola Tesla fight conspiracies while trying to find Amelia Earhart!

The Adventures of Psycho Bonkers
This one is designed to be an activity book to color and I'm kind of tempted to do just that.

The Batman Adventures
I liked it, really fun.

Bitten
Like Teen Wolf but it's super cute and created by Cornelia Funke.

Boom Studios Halloween Haunt 2015
It was okay, not my favorites. They read like they were either last minute or suffered from the shortness.

Chakra the Invincible
This is a different free comic from May. Now that the origin is out of the way, it's just typical adventures of a young superhero but more cartoon Spider-Man than Miss Marvel.
But I find myself really wanting a comic with Sanjay's Super Team.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Again, this is a new free comic, the entire #1. I still want to pick up the rest. It's a much darker take on Sabrina but still includes all the important characters like Salem.

Disenchanted
I like the idea that they up front about a free Web comic that will collected into a book for sale later. However, fairies with graphic violence and mature problems is not for me.

Doctor Strange: The Oath
I really like the beginning...I want to know more about Arana. I still picture the Night Nurse as Rosario Dawson...I don't care that they said she wasn't, but the comic insists she's Caucasian. Wong is really cool but I don't think that character is even in the film. I love Dr. Strange as a character but I still prefer the team-up issues.

Donald Duck's Halloween Scream!
It made me laugh aloud. :)

Fragments of Horror
It's okay, a variation of the ribbon story we all read in grade school.

Vampblade
I like the characters and writing but it is a little embarrassing to be seen with due to the skimpy costumes.

The Garlicks
It's by Lea Hernandez!!! See Rumble Girls below to see why I was so excited...and I need to read basically everything she's ever done right now!
Also, romance with vampires that's not stupid!

Grimm Tales of Terror
Artwork was okay but the story...I felt like throwing up at one point, so gross.

Grimmis Island
Basically, this is issue #1 that I already bought in July but I still really like it and want to get the rest of the series.

Harley Quinn
I might need to start reading Harley Quinn. I loved this issue. She inherits a building full of tenants and has to get a job! Plus, she defends a dog from horrible owners...
Okay, it's very similar to Fraction's Hawkeye which I loved so maybe I'll love this, too.

Hero Cats of Stellar City
I know it's 2014 but I like Action Cats and it has Princeless!

Kitaro
So cute and thought provoking, I loved it. Then, I noticed it was published by Drawn & Quarterly and thought...duh.

Marvel's Most Wanted: Thunderbolts #21
It felt like a recap/introduction issue more than anything else but the Marvel's Most Wanted part sure caught my eye. That's the name that keeps getting associated with the Mockingbird spin-off. What'd I like most would be if they worked with a series of different heroes that Marvel might not think worthy of their own series/movie...yet.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
I had mixed feelings about the book so I was curious about the comic. It's a fairly straight forward adaptation but I can tell that I'll definitely be watching the film, too.

Rachel Rising
It's see short that I can't decide about it but it does intrigue me to want to know more.
Okay, I just found out Terry Moore did Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane which I LOVE so I think I need this, too.

Skylanders
Are Spotlight and Blackout actually available as toys?
They look totally awesome. Apparently, there's a whole book with them.

SpongeBob Comics
I love them, even has a brief Flying Dutchman appearance.

Spook-a-rama
Okay for younger readers, I guess.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
April is an intern at the original research facility and Splinter was given psychotropic drugs. I like this. I feel totally sorry for Splinter but the angst factor and allowing April to be super smart...
The only downside is Karai not being Splinter's daughter...

Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors/Avengers Assemble
I kind of wanted more Loki, lol. It's based off the Disney XD shows and I kind of stopped watching after they stopped having Coulson in every episode.

Uzumaki
Kind of creepy but it ended up being pretty good by the end.

The West Coast Avengers, Vol. 2 #14
Except for Tony, it's like everyone is hooked up with everyone else, Tigra is even with Hank Pym. I wish Mockingbird had more to do, but that's usually the case.

World of Archie
I love their free comics...I'm thinking of trying some of their newer comics, like with Chip Zdarsky.

Yo-Kai Watch
Toys'r'us has all the toys and I still don't understand the appeal.

$1 or less but not free:

The Avengers Spotlight #23
This is the one where "The Vision Goes Hollywood" which doesn't pay off until the last quarter of the comic where he crashes a taping of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The guests are Paul Reubens and Charo! Classic 80s!

Batman #464
I already had #463 and had to know how it ended. This has become my favorite Batman storyline: a young Native American kidnaps the descendents of those who wronged his people and Batman teams up with his grandfather to stop him before he executes them. Also, Batman gains a dog and calls an emergency meeting about what Wayne Enterprises can do to help Native Americans. I wish we could have it turned into a novel written by Sherman Alexie.

Hawkeye #1 (1983)
Hawkeye meets Mockingbird and she's awesome, of course. It has the first appearance of the rocket sled that Deadpool later crashes in Hawkeye vs. Deadpool (2014). Also, the comic has Clint taking all his clothes off and showering...just because...lol.

Hawkeye #2 (1983)
At this point, Marvel must have a goal of having Clint naked or nearly naked every issue. Even Mockingbird complains, "Half-naked men with guns make it hard for me to concentrate." Jorge reminds me too much of Grills so I predict that he dies.
Also, there's a mail in offer for the Kool-aid game on Atari!

Hawkeye #3 (1983)
I'm actually disappointed at the lack of nudity although Steve Rogers does show up wearing the tightest fitting button down shirt imaginable. Clint does not introduce him to Bobbi and Bobbi worries about scaring Clint off. Their mutual attraction that neither will act on is so cute...and such a contrast to what comes later. Also, I'm now the owner of the comic with the "Gosh I love arrows!"panel and the Rocket Sled was destroyed so it's a different one that Deadpool drives...probably the one from the Solo adventures.

Hawkeye #4 (1983)
The nudity is back. It ends with Clint and Bobbi in a heart shaped tub on their honeymoon. Before that, the villain plans to kill Hawkeye so that all the superheroes will come to his funeral...nice that he thinks Hawkeye is that loved...and once inside the funeral, the villain will pump in a sound that will make all the superheroes want to kill each other. Yes, it's the plot for the Kingsman, but 1983!!!
So, Hawkeye ends up destroying his own hearing. :(

Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Volume Three
I might have to admit to myself that I like Mouse Guard and need to read all Mouse Guard. I used to hate anthropomorphic animals when I was younger. It's why I didn't do Redwall or anything like it but now, I don't seem to have the same hangups anymore.
They have plushies, too! They're so CUTE!

Solo Avengers Starring Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch
Clint literally spends the entire issue in his underwear, yes. Trick Shot gets to be sympathetic which is crazy and there are bonus appearances by baby Billy and Tommy. I loved it.

The Spectacular Spider-Man #225

It has a "3-D Live Action Spider-Man Holodisk" on the cover, that's the best part. Otherwise, I prefer the post-modern Peter who's not allowed to call MJ "pretty lady" and other infantilizing crap. MJ gets the shaft for the most part although she does seriously consider abortion based on the tests done by a geneticist.

Under $5:

Back to the Future #1
Marty McFly met Emmett Brown in October 1982! I love that. It's super cute. I wasn't sure about getting the other ones because I love Emmett and this one had Clara, too.

Batgirl #45
Ugh, everything was so good: the story, the artwork, everything. Barbara was so cute with Luke...son of Lucious Fox and the wedding couple was two women. The only thing worrying was that last panel...I'll have to look into that now.
Oh Spoiler alert was referring to a character named Spoiler, lol.

The Cavalry
Melinda May! in a sort of lead role? Okay, it did get better but still felt like it was more about her recruits most of the time although I loved her in a leadership role and she did get to kick ass against robot dogs! Plus, bonus Coulson!
So, did you see that in the comics she's going on a date with Fitz?!

The Marvelous Land of Oz #8
Skottie Young!!!
I've been slowly making my way through Baum's Oz books but the titles are so repetitive that it took me several pages to remember which one this was. However, I basically love whatever Young does.

Power-Up #2-5
Ugh, I love it. I just need #6. It's by Kate Leth and Matt Cummings. It's diverse. It deals with issues and has a man dressed in an anime outfit as his armor. It's also cute and hilarious.
Oh, and it's about a group of regular adults who get super powers and have to deal with it.

Rebels
It's not actually Star Wars related. Instead, it's about the founding of the United States. It looked intriguing so I picked up #1 at Nerd Out and then, Books a Million had #2 for a dollar so I couldn't pass that up. I love history so this was great to see: actual fact mixed with original characters the reader could relate to. I also enjoyed the author's note about how the term "patriot" has been subverted since 9/11 and that he wears a Bernie Sanders pin. I want to track down the other four issues and his DMZ series.

The Wellkeeper
It's a Preview Edition so not much to it, but I liked the story and the artwork was gorgeous although I'm tempted to use it as a coloring book because it's black and white.

Over $5 but under $10:

Oddly Normal
I have definitely learned the name Otis Frampton. He works on How It Should Have Ended but this is his baby. Oddly is a half-witch discovering she has real powers. The artwork the cuteness level that I love and the world building is AMAZING! If I wasn't so behind, I'd start buying the individual issues. This is Volume 1...Volume 3 comes on Free Comic Book Day in May.

Ody-C
Even though reading issue to issue is more like the storyteller doing it in installments, I think it works better collected in a book the way most modern readers first encounter Homer. The first issue didn't grab me but I read #2 and #3 later and was able to get into it. I love how the non-Marvel trade paperbacks tend be ten bucks so when stores do their 25% off, $7.50! That's less than most places charge for the movies.

Small Business Saturday:

Marvel Fanfare #11 1983
First of all, it's kind of hilarious that the front cover has Black Widow and the back has Kaa, both played by Scarlett Johansson who wasn't even born yet. I love watching Natasha being a spy on her own. Also, it has pinups of various characters, including Cloak & Dagger.

Marvel Fanfare #12
Stop knocking out Natasha when you reach the end of chapter!

Marvel Fanfare #13
Yeah, they totally knocked her out again. With a lead character shooting a bow and spending most of the time nearly naked, it felt more like a Hawkeye story. I would love for Natasha to shoot his bow in the MCU!

Rumble Girls: Silky Warrior Tamsin
YES!!!
I only bought this because it was a dollar and the cover was awesome but it's funny and sarcastic and has action and...it reminds me a lot of Bryan Lee O'Malley's stuff but less existential and more anime.
I now need everything she's ever done including a series that's called Killer Princesses from her AND Gail Simone!!

Sleepwalker
For a dollar, I was totally suckered into it by the cover: all prismatic and pretty. The concept is like a reverse Freddy Krueger where the alien enters dreams in order to save the universe.
However, the actual comic was meh...maybe they'll reboot it in a better way later...it's from 1993. The issue even repeated the same advertisement in one issue!
But the second issue was a little better, I loved Spectra and it had better advertisements including a full page solo Sally for the upcoming Nightmare before Christmas theatre release.

Tank Girl #1-4 (2007)
I've never read Tank Girl before. My mom loved the aesthetic when the film came out and I've watched the film on television so after seeing Mad Max: Fury Road, I've been curious about reading the comics. Between the $1 each price and gorgeous cover art, I was sold. After finishing them, I want to re-watch the film in its R rated glory. The comic is definitely R rated, much more so than Deadpool. It's also hilarious and I was happy that the artwork inside is the same artist as the cover as well as quality paper.

Purchased at a different Time:

Bitch Planet
I finally read it!
Because #1 was only a dollar and I'm that cheap...
I mean it's super good and worth all the accolades but very dark and dystopian...I'll read the rest eventually.

Black Magick
They have this stamp thing where every ten dollars, you get a stamp so sometimes, I'll try something new just to get to the stamp level. The GM sold me on Plutona earlier so I trusted his judgment with this. He said that it was a strong female character by a writer who deserves more recognition.
I get around to reading it and it's Greg Rucka who wrote Star Wars: Shattered Empire and Star Wars: Before the Awakening.
Yeah, I totally loved it. I hope the rest of you find your own Comic Book Guy that can steer you to the good stuff.

Deadpool #2 (2016)
The cover has Deadpool ruining a child's birthday party so my mom said this was my birthday card, lol. Clint had a cameo, yay! Adsit died, boo!

Fuck Fairyland #2, 3
This and Jem are my favorite current comics and I hope it's not still just four issues...I don't want it to end!!!
Skottie Young has made this beautiful mix of classic children's stories, sarcasm and gore.

Gwenpool Holiday Special
Nothing in this isn't win. Also, I just realized that all of the action revolves around the females. Even during the Hawkeyes portion, Kate is referred to as the "good" one. It also makes me sad that She-Hulk doesn't have a current solo series.

Hero Complex
Apparently, Los Angeles Times gives out pretty, glossy magazines...wow...although I'm always a little disappointed when a Mission Impossible article neglects Jeremy Renner.

Jem #9, 10
This and Fuck Fairyland are the only comics I must have IMMEDIATELY when they come out. They both just keep getting better and better with each issue.

Jem Holiday Special
I love when they fit My Little Pony references into the issue. I think Ted 2 might have had more My Little Pony references than the Jem movie.
Anyway, there's a sort of Secret Santa gift exchange and it's totally cute...although the Annual had Muppet Babies...

Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Dragons #1
Jim Henson PLUS dragons???
It didn't disappoint. I loved the TV series when I was little. You should also check out the artwork.

Legendary Star-Lord #7
It referenced when Kitty Pryde was being written by Joss Whedon. Lockheed could have been given a little more to do but it was awesome seeing them all together. Also, there was Peter Quill and his dad which makes me curious about where Gunn is going with that...because he said MCU Peter's dad isn't J'son but J'son in this comic looks just like Kurt Russell in the Hateful Eight and everyone says Kurt Russell is who Marvel wants...
hmm...

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
(happy sigh) I need...like every issue. I was so sad when I reached the end. It was perfect.

Plutona #3
It's just awesome, a bunch of kids dealing with the death of a superhero in different ways.

Secret Wars Too
Yes, all the Amerikate is glorious although no hint of romance...
The issue is a bit like Robot Chicken, if you don't like one segment, just wait and you might like something else. Amerikate was my favorite but Foggy Bearson was great, too.

Free Star Wars Comic:
Chewbacca #1
They had a promotion where my mom could show her Star Wars ticket and they gave her this issue. It makes me a little more intrigued about the new Poe series because it's the same team and I did really like this. Chewbacca is on his own and comes across a girl who needs help but she's not totally a damsel. She can take care of herself...mostly. Obviously, I love Phil Noto's work but I only knew Gerry Duggan from Deadpool.

I know, sometimes I feel a little bad about thinking it but...in a lot of ways, it's more fun than Christmas.
