Under the ground was a whole city and Jack guessed that the mounds were what made up the taller rooms. It seemed like all of the Cankorbians wanted to hug them and touch Iefan. He was a little concerned at what they could be passing onto his baby, but the Doctor never stopped any of them so it must be fine.
Then, a Cankorbian appeared with lighter skin, saying, “We have a special remedy for the children and a special outfit.”
He was glad that he had only bothered with a nappy after the bath. However, he was happier about the blue gel circle she held and handed to him. Hopefully, it was clean since he gave the cool ring to Iefan who stuck it into his mouth as soon as possible.
Then, the crying stopped. Oh, sweet relief, he thought and sighed before kissing the baby’s cheek. Jack wrapped him in the reddish brown robes with matching slippers and a crown.
“He looks so cute,” said the proud parent and took out his mobile to take a picture.
“Yeah,” the Doctor agreed and then took the device so Jack could be in the photo. The celebration included singing and dancing as Iefan sat in a chair, resembling a throne.
“Here on Platinda, we have so few that every child is a treasure and every stage in their journey is cause for celebration,” explained the Conkorbian who had provided the clothing and teething ring.
“Thank you,” Jack told her.
“No, thank you, we are forever in your debt. The Delrobs would have stolen our land and enslaved us. Now we can keep them away,” she explained, “Our children don’t cry so loudly or at that pitch.”
After another hour or so, Jack, Iefan and the Doctor headed back to the TARDIS. He couldn’t help yawning and the baby was already asleep. The Doctor had an odd look on his face as they stood in the hallway outside his room.
“You’re leaving soon, aren’t you? Moving back to Cardiff,” he guessed and after a moment, Jack nodded.
“Tomorrow actually,” he said although he hadn’t looked at his watch yet. It might be tomorrow already.
“Right,” said the Doctor and left without another word. Jack sighed.
************************************************************
In the morning, he wore Iefan in the carrier on his chest as they moved the crib, changing table and things into the house. The fact that all the bedrooms were on the second story didn’t help things.
“So, that’s it then,” the Time Lord commented when the bedroom on the TARDIS was just as Jack had left it before they landed on Satellite Five.
“Yep,” Jack said with trepidation growing about resuming a more normal sort of life. He knew it was the right thing to do. It was what Ianto would have wanted especially being so close to Rhi, but it was very different than living in a protective spaceship that could go anywhere and watch over Iefan so he didn’t roll down the stairs.
"How about a trip to the Phosphorous Carousel of the Great Magellan Gestalt?" he offered and Jack shook his head. This was tough on both of them.
“I’m going to miss both of you,” the Doctor spoke, sticking his hands in his trouser pockets.
“You know where I live, you could always visit,” Jack suggested although it hit him how the Doctor wasn’t the only one being alone. Once again, he’d have to face that large empty bed. He’d have Iefan but that wasn’t the same as the companionship of another adult. The Doctor had been there to discuss what had happened that day, eat lunch with or tell him to go back to sleep while he fed Iefan.
“I suppose it’s time to find a new companion,” the other uttered, “but between you, Rose, Martha and Donna…those are some big shoes to fill.”
“You bet they are,” Jack tried to say with a grin except he couldn’t; “but you need someone to watch over you sometimes. I wonder if that's why the TARDIS has been pulling these tricks lately. She wanted me to stay. She's worried about you...I'm going to miss her."
The other man was silent, too silent for his own good. He'd hit too close to the mark yet he needed to hear it.
"I’m going to miss you, too,” Jack added and saw him fidgiting with his pockets.
"Maybe...maybe I could go to Mars, I haven't been there in a long time," the Doctor spoke and Jack knew he was using it to avoid talking more about his feelings.
He crossed over to him and hugged the other as best he could with Iefan in between them. Those brown eyes were so big; it reminded him of a puppy and just as sad.
Jack pressed his lips to his as he had done a month earlier. It was lasting longer than he expected as the kiss continued. Then, he pressed his luck by pressing his tongue against the other’s lips. When they parted, he was shocked into breaking the kiss. They stood there and looking at anything except each other and their red, swollen lips. He should probably leave right now. That would be the best plan of action. Instead, he took the Doctor in his arms and kissed him again. Lips met and parted for tongues to explore mouths and teeth. His hands went down his suitcoat to his ass and as Jack squeezed, Iefan spoke, “Ba ya ya ya.” He released his grip and backed away.
“We should go,” he said and the Doctor nodded, crossing his arms. With a final shared glance, he left without looking back. He almost ran to the couch in the living room and sank down on it.
“Oh, Iefan, I almost just did something…it would have ruined everything between him and me,” Jack said, taking his son out of the carrier and the carrier off his chest, “And now, what am I going to do?”
He thought about searching for whether there was any alcohol left in the house. The baby pulled on his coat and reached for the pocket where the teething ring would be. It also held his mobile which the baby pulled out. He started pressing buttons.
“No, no calling Australia or Adipose Three,” Jack spoke and took the device away. Somehow, Iefan had reached the phone book and Jack looked through the names. It was clear that he didn’t want to be alone right now. Maybe he should call someone up. The feel of the suitcoat had been too familiar, like he was cheating on him. It was like what happened with Alonso. Before that, he hadn’t kissed someone since that woman in New York and he had been full of hormones then. Now, he had rational thought and…and it had just been too emotional. Leaving the TARDIS and being on his own with Iefan and what today is just added up to a moment of weakness. He sighed. It wasn’t even today. Just because his watch said it was, didn’t make it so. Jack knew he would have to fix the time and date on the watch to be correct, but he didn’t want to. He hadn’t done anything with the watch; just left it as Ianto had it. Taking out the teething ring and giving it to the baby, he kissed his cheek.
“Today, in 2010, would have been your daddy’s twenty-seventh birthday,” he explained and Iefan looked up at him with pale blue eyes. Jack glanced from Iefan to the mobile.
“Do you want to meet your aunt today?” he asked although the only response he received was drool dripping onto the teething ring and sliding off onto his trousers, “I’ll take that as a yes.”
He scrolled through the names and chose one. After several rings, she answered with, “Hello.”
“Mica?” he asked because it sounded like her, but he wasn’t sure.
“Uncle Jack? How did you get my number?” she questioned and he smiled.
“When you showed me your brother’s baby photo, I sent it to mine,” he explained, “Now, I need your help.”
There was another pause and he could almost feel the incredulity through the earpiece.
“Why do you need my help?” she questioned and Iefan gummed his teething ring with happiness.
“Because I need you to arrange a meeting between me and your mum in a public place, I’m thinking the play area on Darwin Drive. Is it still around?” he inquired. Rhi had picked it before and it was a nice, open space where the uneasy reunion could be conducted and that would be far enough from Cardiff. He didn’t want to worry about Gwen at the moment.
