Rhi held her hands together in front of her face and she didn’t look at Jack as she muttered, “But this is all so bloody crazy, the immortality I can take and not staying dead and traveling out in outer space, but this? No, it makes no sense.”

“I didn’t know right away. You remember when I thought I had the flu. My eating wasn’t the best and I was sleeping more than usual, but…” he remembered aloud, “I thought it was normal after everything that happened.”

She let out a muffled sob, wiped her nose with the back of her sleeve and commented, “It can’t be true though.”

“You know it’s true, you’ve been pregnant yourself. Remember how my back was hurting me? You even commented on my eating habits, how I had barely eaten anything,” he reminded her, “but you also told me how I had gained weight. Baby weight, it was all baby weight. Now, I’m back to the same weight I was when we first met.”

Mica was watching him with intense brown eyes, but he shook his head.

It was obvious that she wanted to come over and he couldn’t blame her. He wished he could put an arm around Rhi or something. However, he wasn’t sure how that would be received.

“Why didn’t you try to tell me anything before?” she asked in half-strangled voice he could barely hear. Behind them was the sound of a skateboard clattering past.

“Would you have believed me? If I just had the baby belly? You’d think I’d had one too many beers and if he kicked, you would have flipped. You know you would and probably kicked me out of the house,” Jack spoke, “and I would have understood, but why go through that when I can show you the baby?”

“But I could have…” she started and trailed off. He doubted she could even convince herself.

“Was that another reason you left?” she questioned as Iefan yawned.

“He was the main reason I left,” Jack confirmed and bounced his legs to wake him up, “I couldn’t trust anyone on Earth to deliver him. I didn’t want to be poked and prodded and studied and I wasn’t about to let that happen to him.”

Her face softened for a second before punching him in the arm.

“You still left us for seven years,” she complained and sighed, “but it would have been worse knowing you had my nephew with you.”

She wiped her face again and tried to smile.

“Well, can I hold him then?” she asked with a sniffle.

“Of course, of course, you can,” Jack told her and couldn’t help his eyes being wet as well.

“Iefan, this is your aunt,” he said, holding him for her to take, “Rhi, this is Iefan Jones.”

He watched her brown eyes close on hearing the last name and she pursed her lips before holding the baby so tight. Then, she held him up as if analyzing every inch and twisted him with a gentle action so he laughed.

“You look so much like your dad, you have no idea,” she uttered with tears on her face, “Oh, he would have loved you so much.”

Rhi set him on his feet. However, he must have been too tired because he slumped back down at once to a sitting position. His little head lay against her chest. Mica took it as a sign to come back and started walking over.

“Since you had today planned with her, does she know?” Rhi asked and he shook his head.

“She thinks I adopted him. She calls him her cousin but only because I’m Uncle Jack,” he explained and she nodded.

“Isn’t he cute?” Mica declared, “And he looks so much like David, what a coincidence!”

Jack looked at Rhi to see what she’d say except she was looking at him. The teenager must not have heard anything they’d discussed. Finally, she turned to her daughter and agreed, “I know, isn’t that amazing?”

She picked up the plush animal that Iefan still held with a tight grip despite the snoring.

“Is this a generic Stitch or one of those where they come out with sixty different colors of Pooh?” Rhi inquired while squeezing a leg.

“I’m a bit familiar with Winnie the Pooh, but not this Stitch,” he admitted although Steven might have mentioned him once. Mica started laughing like it was hilarious and even Rhi was smirking.

“What? What is it?” he asked because it felt like some huge joke that he wasn’t in on.

“Stitch is an alien created by a scientist who gets exiled on Earth and becomes the pet of a little Hawaiian girl. He has six arms like this although the nose is a little small and the ears are different,” Rhi said with a smile, “It’s a Disney film.”

If he didn’t know how rare they were, he’d have guessed that the film people had seen a Flubble.

“It is an alien, but it was called a Flubble. They’re extinct now,” he explained and felt Rhi’s right arm come across his back.

“When are you going back to Torchwood?” she asked and Jack looked straight ahead; feeling anticipation of his answer from both sides.

“My best guess would be…never,” he told Rhi and she punched him in the arm again.

“Jack, they need you,” Rhi spoke and glared at him with the death stare that her brother also had.

“And he needs me,” he replied and held one of his little feet, “I don’t want to make the same mistakes I made before.”

“No, you’re making all new ones,” she retorted and Mica slumped as though not wanting to get involved, “That’s okay, it’s what happens. I would try to fix what we did wrong with David and some new problem would happen, but I think this is a mistake.”

He sighed. Well, she could say what she wanted; he didn’t care about Torchwood anymore.

“Too late for tea, but you’re welcome for dinner, Johnny will be shocked,” Rhi spoke in a happy tone, “He gave up on you ever coming back. David’s in Cardiff with Emyr, but he’ll be pleased. Oh, Emyr is David’s boyfriend.”

For a second, she was quiet and wore a frown before continuing, “Johnny’s a lot better with him than he was with Ianto. He doesn’t tease him.”

It started to snow and that made the decision for him.

“I’d love that,” he agreed and forgot how much he enjoyed being around them. As they walked to their vehicles, Rhi whispered, “We’ll tell Johnny that Iefan’s adopted.”

***************************************************************

A couple of weeks passed of settling into the house, babyproofing and trying to see what his new life would be like. It was night-time when he was watching the telly. There was breaking news about some sort of situation in Cardiff where gunshots had been heard. He watched and had to admit not only was he worried about what might be going on, but was suppressing the urge to go there. It was probably the reason he still hadn’t dressed for bed.

Then, there was a knock at the door. Jack wondered who that would be at this hour and whether Iefan would wake up. As soon as he opened it, he thought how he should have known.

“Rhi,” he acknowledged and gestured for her to enter. She nodded towards the screen and commented, “So, you’ve been watching then.”

He nodded.

“Then, you would have noticed the black vehicle parked outside…”

“I’m not with them anymore,” he maintained and crossed his arms.

“There were gunshots at the scene,” she spat and he looked at his boots taken from the TARDIS’ wardrobe.

“Iefan is sleeping upstairs, I can’t just leave,” he complained.

“I know, that’s why I came, I’ll look after him,” she said and crossed her own arms, “They need you, Jack.”

There was no arguing with her.

“Alright, he shouldn’t wake up, I’ll be back as soon as I can,” he told her and didn’t miss the smile on her face as he left.

Jack parked his car some blocks down from the cameras and police. He noticed the large black vehicle and wondered if it had been the one to replace the one nicked at Rhi’s house. When the police were looking the other way, he snuck into an exit door. There were noises coming from above him. The body of a police constable lay on the stairs just inside the door. He checked for a pulse, but there wasn’t one. Her red hair was coming out of the bun on her head. However, she was still holding her pistol and he took it for his own.

Hehe, it was comments like this that made me add a lot more David/Emyr to the sequel. It just didn't fit that easily into this one, sorry.

Thank you...I hope you liked how I ended up resolving Jack going back...
