I'm no longer Christian but his arguments baffle me. The Gospel states very clearly that you should want to serve others, to give of yourself--Christ offered himself as the ultimate sacrifice, that's like most of the point, isn't it? The early Christians in Acts (chapters two and four notably) split all of their possessions and made sure none of their brothers in Christ went hungry. And there is a long tradition (Biblically-based) of voluntary poverty and of charity. It used to be that churches were largely responsible for caring for the poor (to varying success or motives at different times, of course) and they no longer have that as a primary emphasis.
