ugh
First of all, I loved the original. I did. I love almost all of the films where Disney had cartoons drawn into live action.
However, it's not like this could be totally terrible. It had potential. I definitely saw their point of view where modern advances in CGI could have a a really awesome looking Elliot. In theory, the fur was an intriguing idea. I have some personal canon for a fantasy universe where most dragons are mammals and start off with fur.
In reality, he reminded me of a large, green Sully.
The story was ugh...I wanted so much more from the mystery of Elliot ending up in the woods. Looking back now, I think Stranger Things is more similar to how I wanted it to go down but with Elliot being awesome and not eating people like the Demogorgon.
The direction was lazy, too. Oakes Fegley is actually a decent actor but this movie didn't prove that at all. There's something about Bryce Dallas Howard that makes me assume all her characters will be a bitch and Robert Redford...I probably watched Captain America: Winter Soldier too many times prior to this film so I didn't trust him either.
The real villain is Karl Urban who doesn't come off as well either. He had a much more well-rounded, better written character that provided better acting opportunities with Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok and he's BARELY IN THAT FILM!
Also, Oregon/Washington and New Zealand are not the same. I'm guessing they think it's been a few years since a Tolkien film, it's fine...no one will notice...but we do, we totally do. Also, the schoolbus was wrong. I know I went to a poor district but are you telling me that a school district in the forest with mostly lumber employees is going to be rich? I started kindergarten in 1988 and my bus looked way older than this bus that was supposed to be 3-5 years before that.
Yep, it's 80s which is probably another reason why I'm so quick to compare it with Stranger Things. I might have different thoughts on it if I saw it in 3D so that Elliot's fur and flying were cooler.
