March 20th, 2017, Part 2
“When people find out the truth, you will have over six billion angry, human beings taking up arms to fight you, that might be a fight you think you can win, but at the end of it, the human race in defense of its children will fight to the death and if I have to lead them into battle, then I will,” Jack promised in a definite threat. Without realizing it, Mica scooted closer to the edge of the couch.
“You’ve got enough information on this planet: Check your records. His name is Captain Jack Harkness. Go back a hundred and fifty years and see what you’re facing,” Ianto said with equal menace although she could also tell how much he’d believed in Jack. She could see it in his face especially the eyes.
“This is fascinating, isn’t it?” asked the alien in what could almost be construed as sarcasm, “The infant mortality rate is 29,158 deaths per day. Every three seconds a child dies. The human response is to accept and adapt.”
“We’re adapting right now and we’re making this a war,” Jack responded in a calmer tone.
“Then, the fight begins,” the alien spoke and she began to tense. She always knew it didn’t have a happy ending yet she wished somehow in the watching, it could change. A different result would occur. Now, it felt the ending would come soon. Her uncles looked at each other like what that might mean.
“We’re waiting for your reply,” Jack prompted as though already sick of the waiting game.
“Action has been taken,” hissed the alien and her insides constricted. Then, alarms were heard to be going off.
“What’ve you done?!” Jack demanded and she couldn’t help jumping. She’d thought he’d sounded angry before. It was nothing compared to this.
“You wanted a demonstration of war. A virus has been released. It will kill everyone in the building,” the alien voice stated and her mouth was wide open again. She looked over to see her mum’s brown eyes glisten in the lamplight. Jack kissed Iefan on the top of his head and sighed. The baby was asleep. Gwen was holding her knees to her chest.
On the video, Jack hadn’t sorted it out yet. He touched Ianto’s shoulder as he ran out of the room. Ianto looked at the floor a minute and then, an odd look came over his face. There was a sound like heavy metal hitting wood and she saw him taking a safety off a gun he held in his right hand. He cocked it and pointed it right at the tank.
“If there’s a virus, then there must be an anti-virus. Release it now or I’ll blow a hole in that tank and we’ll all die together,” Ianto threatened and once again, she was struck by how comfortable he seemed with it all, like it really was just a normal day. Jack ran in with his gun already in his hand and pointed in the same direction.
“You’ve made your point. Now stop this and we can talk,” Jack spoke and his voice wasn’t as confident as before.
“You are dying, even now,” the alien voice replied and they started firing. The tank appeared to be bullet-proof since they bounced off with white sparks as they hit the glass. Jack gave up first while Ianto still held the gun up without shooting it. A horrible shrieking started.
“What’s that noise? What’s it doing?” Jack asked and the desperation was audible in what he was saying. They only gave it a momentary thought before he held Ianto by the shoulders.
“We’ve got to get you out of here. I can survive anything, but you can’t,” he said and she wondered if that meant the immortality thing was true. However, her thoughts were distracted by Ianto’s face.
“It’s too late. I breathed the air,” he uttered and she felt her own eyes welling up as well.
“There’s got to be something. There’s got to be an antidote,” Jack complained as her uncle started to look sick.
“You said you would fight,” the alien voice reminded and she wanted to hurt it. Jack sighed before saying, “Then I take it back, all right? I take it all back, but not him!”
Jack had let go of her uncle to confront the alien with those words and now her uncle was wobbling on his feet. As he started to fall out of frame, Jack rushed to his side. The camera had been positioned to only catch someone speaking and they weren’t able to see them anymore. Their voices were still picked up though.
“No, No, No, No, No, No, No, Ianto,” Jack wailed and she wondered whether he’d already died.
“The remnant will be disconnected,” announced the alien and if it hadn’t been video from almost eight years ago, she would have told him where to shove it.
“It’s all my fault,” Jack uttered in a hoarse voice.
“No, it’s not,” her uncle whispered and she breathed a sigh of relief that he was still alive for now.
“Don’t speak. Save your breath,” Jack spoke and she could tell he was crying. However, she hoped he wouldn’t do as Jack told him to.
“I love you,” Ianto stated and he was choked up, too. Mica felt the tears come down herself.
“Don’t,” Jack replied and she could tell how different Jack on the couch was from the one on tape, “Ianto, Ianto, Ianto, stay with me.”
On screen, Jack was begging for the second time in five minutes. She’d never thought she’d ever see him beg. It was odd enough when he'd asked her for help.
“Ianto, stay with me, please. Stay with me. Stay with me, please, please…” he continued to beg and she put her hands to her face. She wondered if the audio was worse than actually seeing it. The level of desperation in his voice by this point made her wonder whether that was moment when her uncle…
There was more controlled sobbing and a small voice called out, “Hey.” He wasn’t dead yet.
“It was good, yeah?” Ianto asked and she could hear Jack respond, “Yeah.”
“You’ll forget me,” Ianto uttered and more tears came down her face.
“Never could,” Jack tried to assure him.
“In a thousand years time, you won’t remember me,” Ianto stated again and her stomach hurt from the pain she heard in it.
“Yes, I will, I promise I will,” Jack vowed and a few seconds later, “Ianto…Ianto, don’t go. Don’t leave me, please. Please don’t.”
“You will die and tomorrow, you will deliver the children,” the alien hissed and she hoped it suffered the worst excruciating death imaginable. It was too quiet after that. He was gone. Gwen’s face was red and puffy. Her mum’s eyes were shut even though there had been nothing to see. Then, she noticed Jack was missing. Iefan was sleeping on that part of the couch alone. She hadn’t even noticed him leaving. It could have been at any time during the death part. Jack couldn’t have gone far. There had been no one leaving through the front door and she would have heard the baby gate being moved. Mica decided to try for the kitchen and saw through the window that he had snuck outside. He seemed to be looking at the flowering bushes in the back. As she came closer, a shadow passed over the ground and she looked up in time to see a large shape fly out of sight. It almost looked like that dinosaur she had seen so long ago.
“I couldn’t do it. I thought I could, but…” Jack spoke, shaking his head, “but I saw enough. Was it worth it for you?”
His agonizing pleas were still echoing in his head.
“Yeah,” she answered with the simplest answer that she could.
“I don’t suppose this makes you think twice about your hacking past-time or Torchwood?” he asked without even a glance at her.
“Nope,” she agreed because…because she couldn’t form it into words, but it was her favorite part of the day doing that, “but what about you?”
There was a long sigh and a pause.
“I was expecting to feel certain things and I did,” Jack said, “but there were also things I wasn’t expecting.”
He rubbed a hand over his face and she waited for him to continue.
“I was sad and anxious, I almost wanted to tell myself not to antagonize them, but then Ianto…” he started and shook his head before saying more, “I felt…I felt proud of him. I just wasn’t expecting that to hit me so hard that he faced those aliens and he accepted everything. He threatened the 456, but he never begged. I begged. I begged those pieces of scum while I should have been spending what little time we had left. I should have told him I loved him, but I didn’t. I was a coward…”
“Oh, Jack,” she interrupted because she was worried he was going to cry again. As she moved to face him, she knew she had underestimated him. His face was determined like at the beginning of the video.
“He was brave which is what I need to be. It was his idea to go to London. When he found out about those kids I helped trade in 1965, he said, ‘The Jack I know would have stood up to them’ and I’m not that Jack anymore,” he stated with resolution, “But I want to be, I want to be the Jack he always wanted me to be especially for our son.”
She had an inkling what that might entail.
“Does that mean you’re really staying?” asked and he nodded with a smile, “And you’re going back to Torchwood?”
“Yes,” he answered and she wrapped her arms around him.
“Yes!” she screamed and he laughed. When he stopped, she heard the back door open, but she couldn’t take her eyes off his face. There was a twinkle in his eyes and a bit of the cocky grin like in the old photos she’d seen.
Captain Jack was back.

Date: 2010-02-19 09:40 pm (UTC)anyway...Yay!!! So much yay!! This was a great chapter. It was so much easier to read the transcript, if you will, than to watch it. Of course it doesn't help things having Queen's No-One But You (Only the Good) playing while reading it. I love that she keeps seeing Myfawny. It'd be awesome if Jack were the one to get her home to the Hub. I think it'd be good for him. And I'm looking forward to reading about Captain Jack. yay!!!
