Jack held Iefan in one arm and a nappy bag with his other. Today, he would be meeting Thomas and he wasn't sure what to expect. He had never gotten along with Joe or most spouses his children had married through the years. Luckily, he hadn't been close with most of them so it didn't matter.
"Jack!" Alice called and waved him over to a tree and bench near the playground. There was a man with red-hair who was about the same height as she. At first, Jack wasn't sure that was Thomas, but it had to be him. He was surprised. The man looked barely thirty. A sense of pride came over Jack that his daughter was able to attract this much younger bloke, like her old man.
"Captain Jack Harkness," he spoke and stuck out his hand, "This is my son, Iefan. He's sixteen months. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Thomas Moretti," the other man spoke and took his hand, "Melissa had told me...basically nothing about you, but I would like to know more."
Jack kissed Iefan's cheek and set him on the ground. Iefan clutched his leg and refused to move.
"No," the toddler said and pointed. Lucia was standing at the edge of the playground, staring.
"Faba is in the bag with me. I'm not going to let anything happen to him. The two of you just need to spend more time together," Jack said, prying his son's hands off and nudging him towards the bright colored plastic. The girl disappeared into it and Iefan walked with trepidation over to the other children.
"Will he be okay like that?" asked Alice and he nodded.
"Should be," Jack replied, "Rhi takes him to one there in Newport all the time."
"And Rhi's...who exactly?" Thomas questioned with a quizzical expression, "Not a girlfriend, I know."
"Oh, if I could be so lucky to have a girl like her," Jack answered with a smile, "No, she's Iefan's aunt and takes care of him while I'm at work."
Thomas gave Alice a look and sat down, patting the space beside him. She shook her head. Jack took a seat on the other side of him and set down the nappy bag beside him.
"And what would this work be, Jack?" Thomas asked.
"Government, civil service," he replied, "It's demanding, but it pays well and has benefits you'd never believe."
"I bet," Thomas agreed, "I work for a marketing firm; writing, graphics...a little of everything, but I love it."
"That's great," Jack commented and put his hands over his knees. Alice left them for the playground.
"My wife...she doesn't talk a lot about her past," Thomas said in a soft voice.
"I wouldn't blame her. She's been through a lot...more than anyone should have to face," Jack uttered and couldn't help remembering his little girl's face as she held Steven in her arms.
"I just wish she could be honest with me. I thought that's what married people were supposed to do," Thomas spoke.
"I'm afraid I'm the same way. I've never been one for talking about my past," Jack explained, "not even with those I love."
"Lucia, what are you doing?!" Alice cried and both men jumped up. Children were screaming.
"Fight! Fight!" others chanted as Jack and Thomas ran to the sound.
"Oww!" Lucia shrieked and Jack saw Iefan biting her leg.
"Iefan! Stop!" he yelled in disbelief. As soon as the toddler did so, Thomas stepped forward and picked up Lucia. Then, Jack noticed scratches on Iefan's arms and his jeans were torn.
"She pusht me," Iefan complained and he picked him up.
"Is this true?" he asked, turning to Alice. She nodded with watery eyes.
"I came over in time to see Lucia push Iefan down on the little bridge and he pulled on her shoes so she tripped. Then, they started fighting and I couldn't do anything. What if one of them had pushed me?"
Tears were coming down her face and Jack wanted to comfort her despite what her daughter had done, but she had Thomas for that. Her husband had wrapped an arm around her, squeezing and giving a kiss on the cheek. Then, he let go and turned to Lucia.
"Lucia, that is a horrible thing you've done. Iefan is only a baby..."
"But he bit me!" she complained and held up her leg with a half circle bite mark. Part of the bite mark was bloody and Jack looked at Iefan who started to cry. He held him close and rubbed his back. Thomas took the little girl away and Alice came nearer.
"Is he alright?" she asked with concern in her hazel eyes. Jack checked him over with a thorough eye.
"He'll be fine, just some scratches and a ruined pair of jeans," he replied and kissed the boy on his cheek.
"I'm so sorry, I just..." she paused; bringing a hand to her mouth and shaking her head for a moment, "I just can't believe she did that...it's like I've raised a monster. How did I do that?"
"Like I know anything...I've never been this involved with any of my children before. Lucia practically raised you by herself," Jack spoke, "You did a fine job with Steven though."
She shook her head.
"I couldn't save him. My daughter's a spoiled brat and now..." Alice uttered, "and now, Thomas and I are having another one and how do I know I won't mess this one up, too?"
"Oh Alice," he told her and put an arm around her. She shook her head again.
"It's too weird; you, this. After I knew, you stopped being this way with me. No more hugs, no more kisses and mum was never the affectionate type either," she whispered, "I tried so hard with him. I wanted it to be different, but even with her; I catch myself having to remember things like telling her that I love her more often, because it just doesn't come easily."
Jack's insides twisted into knots and he wanted to disappear. Half of that was his fault.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry we weren't better parents," he apologized as Iefan played with the buttons on his coat.
"Two minutes...less than that now," Thomas announced and waved his mobile as he walked back to them, 'I have her on time-out."
Jack let go of Alice as though she was hot. He wasn't sure what Thomas would think about his hugging her. As it was, he still looked suspicious.
"Did you try talking to Iefan about the biting?" the young man asked.
"No, why would I do that?" Jack answered with narrowed blue eyes.
"Because it's not a good habit to establish," said Thomas and he crossed his arms.
"Are you trying to tell me how to raise my son? Because that's ridiculous," Jack spat and felt Iefan grab his shirt to be closer to him.
"I'm sure that's not what Thomas meant..." started Alice.
"I'm proud of Iefan. He was able to defend himself against a three year old? Four year old?" he questioned and Alice was the one to answer.
"Five in March," she said in a soft voice.
"Five? Five and she's beating up on a kid who hasn't even turned two?" he asked, directing it at Thomas, "I think you're more upset that Iefan was defending himself and defending himself quite well against your precious daughter despite the age difference."
"How dare you," Thomas spoke, "You don't know me at all. You waltz in after who knows how long and just expect to know everything. You didn't even know her age. I bet you don't even know her birthdate."
He knew it was in March, but he had to shake his head. It had all become a huge mess.
"I should leave," he stated and was about to say more before he thought better of it. He walked back to the bench and picked up the nappy bag.
"Please don't," Alice begged and he hated hearing her beg. It reminded him of last time. He tried something he hadn't before. His blue eyes locked with her hazel ones.
'Phone me,' he thought and tried to send it into her mind, like with any person who hadn't received training to block such thoughts. She nodded and he walked back to the car park.
"I wonder what your Aunt Rhi and everyone else is doing. They have to be having a better time than this," Jack commented with a sigh. He unlocked the door and sat inside. Iefan stood up and hit the horn so it pealed long and loud.
"I am proud of you. Not too many toddlers could have done that. Soon, you won't even need me," he said and held him so he couldn't touch the horn anymore, "But not too soon, okay?"
"Taddy," Iefan told him with a smile.
"Your daddy would have been proud of you, too," Jack spoke and in that moment, Iefan looked so much like Ianto.

Date: 2010-04-15 04:50 am (UTC)I've actually had to reconsider my characterization of Lucia a couple times, but basically, she's a brat.
