Two Steps Forward and One Step Back
"Alice, I love this Vermicelli," Mica complimented and Alice drank from her grape juice without making eye contact.
"My sister make too much earlier so we took some home," Thomas explained.
"Oh," she said and twirled it around on her fork.
"Is it time for presents yet? Or biscuits?" Lucia asked with a yawn. Alice looked at Thomas and they both nodded.
"We'll be right back," she said and they both disappeared into the kitchen again. Iefan stood up to see well and Jack had to pull him back down. He seemed to be doing fine with the booster seat and he hadn't had problems with Lucia. She wasn't acting moody. Maybe there was some hope for her. Jack hoped that was the case for the new baby's sake. Thomas and Alice re-entered with platters devoted to Biscotti, sweet breads and other desserts, including Marzipan.
"Doggy!" Iefan cried and pointed to one of Marzipan animals. Every time he recognized a dog, Jack braced himself for what was coming, but the toddler hadn't asked for one yet. However, the house did seem big and empty with just the two of them sometimes. A memory came to him of when Alice was small.
"Alice, do you remember when you kept begging for a dog?" he asked as he took a biscuit for Iefan. She shook her head and curiosity shown on Thomas' face.
"You saw this movie about a dog that grows really big and you wanted one just like him. You kept begging me and your mum for one even though we tried to explain how a giant dog wasn't practical," Jack said and drank more of the wine. Alice had an odd expression on her face for a second before she spoke, "Never did get the dog though, we had a cat, but I never had a dog until Joe insisted on one. I'm not sure what happened to it. He took it with him in the divorce."
"What were their names?" Thomas asked as he cut off a piece of sweet bread, "The cat and dog."
"The cat was named Copernicus and the dog was named Jamie," she said and most of the table laughed, "and I had nothing to do with either name, at least Jamie was easy to say."
"Right," Jack agreed and remembered Steven calling the dog to him.
"Why would that matter?" Thomas asked and raised his fork to his mouth. Lucia pulled on her hair and looked from one parent to the other.
"Because Jamie is a lot easier to scream when you're trying to get a dog inside and out of the rain," Alice replied and popped one of the Marzipan into her mouth.
"How about we play a game?" Mica suggested, "We could all say the last book we read."
It had to go better than asking about the last person you'd kiss which would be boring when surrounded by committed couples. When no one said anything in reply, Mica continued, "I read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Uh, now it would be Iefan's turn."
"I'm still reading him book seven of Harry Potter," Jack answered and realized he had to think of a different one for himself, "I read...it was about Michelangelo. Lucia, your turn. Which book did you read last?"
Given the question, her immediate response was, "I don't know."
"Didn't you read one of your new books?" Alice suggested.
"Oh, yeah, The Cat in the Hat," Lucia spoke and broke the biscotti in half.
"Nurse Matilda," Alice answered.
"I read one of the X-Men comics," Johnny admitted with a smile.
"The latest Rowling book," Rhi said and laughed.
"Pathologies of Power by Bill Farmer," Emyr spoke and grimaced, "It's for a class."
"My turn then," David said, "I reread the Lord of the Rings. Have you ever read them, Uncle Jack?"
Jack could remember when everyone seemed to talk a lot about Tolkien and Lewis and their books, but they never held much interest for him. He had enough of that at work. However, Ianto had been a fan even if the best he could do was making Jack promise to watch the films sometime.
"No, I watched the films, but not the books. I put them in storage," he admitted and it probably sounded nice and normal to anyone hearing it except that storage was a Torchwood warehouse where boxes of Ianto's things sat next to similar boxes for Tosh and Owen.
"You should," Mica told him, "they're good like Harry Potter."
"I'll keep that in mind," Jack said and ate his sweetbread.
"And what about you?" she asked Thomas.
"I am trying to read The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo," he answered and Alice laughed. Thomas stood up to pour more drinks as Alice explained, "I did try and warn him."
"At least it's translated in Italian so I know all the words, it's just...too many words and not enough..." he struggled with what to say.
"It's slow and boring," Alice supplied for him and his green eyes were quizzical.
"Is that what I mean?" he asked her and she nodded. This was really good wine. He should ask for the vintage.
"When he died, that was quite the sight though," Jack said with a laugh and shook his head. Thomas chuckled but it sounded odd. It was the truth though. He'd gone out of curiosity and hoping that an event of that magnitude might draw the Doctor. Millions of people crowded the streets of Paris. He had counted the trip as a success after meeting Nikola Tesla. The man did everything in threes, even sex. Johnny put his hand around Rhi. She gave him a bite of her dessert.
"And I suppose you were there?" Thomas asked and plopped a piece of fruit in his mouth. Alice cleared her throat and he remembered how he was supposed to be on his best behaviour. He wanted Thomas to like him for Alice's sake.
"Bad joke I suppose," Jack said and took one of the Marzipans.
"Could have been worse," Emyr commented, "My dad used to tell one about Indians until he offended one of the neighbors."
Emyr tried to catch his boyfriend's eyes, but David ignored him.
"Do you have a lot of family around here?" Mica asked Thomas. He nodded and explained, "I must be one of the few Italians born with red hair and the only one in my family until Lucia. All my grandparents are here, my parents, an aunt, two uncles, lots of cousins, five brothers and one sister. All my brothers are younger. The comic thing is that Missy was born a Moretti but we take the tests and they say that we're not related unless it's a tiny little bit."
Jack had wondered about that.
"That was a big change to get used to, never had a large family before," Alice spoke with a genuine smile. It wasn't all his fault though. Alice's mum could have married someone else or at least had other lovers. He knew what she meant though. Between Rhi, Gwen and Martha and their families, Jack was beginning to learn a way of life he had never known before. Even on Boeshane, it had just been the four of them and that was for such a short period of time. He'd never had so many people before who cared about him and most of them even knew quite a few of his secrets.
"Missy never mentions her family that much. What your dad like? His parents? Where he came from? I only hear about her mum occasionally. She sounds like a strong woman," said Thomas, looking right at Jack. No, she wouldn't have. He took a moment to think what he could say.
"He worked for the government. His parents died a long time ago, but our parents weren't together long. They never even lived together..."
"What? They never even lived together? But they had children, I don't understand," Thomas interrupted him.
"Well, that didn't matter much to them. It was the sixties; free love and all of that," Alice spoke before drinking her grape juice.
"You have to pay for love?" Lucia asked in confusion.
"No, it's an expression for people who kiss people and stuff like that without thinking about what might happen," Alice explained and he could hear resentment in her voice, like before when he first showed up in Italy.
"So, you subscribe to that philosophy also?" Thomas questioned and he watched Iefan for a moment. His son had taken two Marzipan bunnies and was hopping them around his plate.
"Yes, I do," he admitted because that period was the closest he had seen on Earth to what it was like in his own time. His parents' marriage had been so normal that it was seen as archaic by their neighbors. Most had open marriages or involved a third partner into the equation.
