Chapter Two

Elizabeth folded her arms across her chest and stared out over the horizon.

“Keep a weather eye on the horizon,” Will had said that to her what felt like a lifetime ago, but he wasn’t coming…he didn’t even know where she was. She didn’t even know where she was. At least she had James for company. As she uncrossed her arms, she looked down and had the odd thought that her breasts seemed bigger.

However, this idea was interrupted by a rumbling in her stomach and not the good kind since she spent the next five minutes throwing up everything that had been in it. It was an occurrence that was repeated three more days in a row. She spat into the ocean and heard James come up behind her, holding her hair as she retched again.

There was that little intake of breath as though he wanted to say something and wasn’t sure how. When there was a last trickle from her mouth, he found his voice and spoke, “Every morning, you’re up and spewing up whatever is in your stomach. Something seems different about you.”
He was stumbling as badly as the day he’d proposed to her except that she didn’t know what he was getting at this time while she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.

“I don’t mean…” he trailed off before starting again, “I merely feel…I think…you may be…with child.”
It was absurd and she hit him in the face hard before he could stand up.

“Elizabeth!” he cried in a slightly nasally tone, but she was already heading for the other side of the island. It was absolutely absurd. She couldn’t be with child. How did one become that way anyway? Women who’d had their wedding night did. Oh, she thought, remembering what she’d shared with James.

Even now, she became all strange and tingly when thinking of it. Fire raced below her navel yet was she now carrying a permanent reminder of it? She removed her shirt and breeches. Her beasts were larger than they had ever been and a bit sensitive to the touch. The sparse diet of coconuts, fish and grapes should have maintained her flat figure.

However, it wasn’t as flat as it was. Laying a hand on the developing curve of her abdomen, she knew he must be right. They were going to have a baby. Elizabeth fell back gently on the sand and closed her eyes. The fine sand was soft against her naked skin. A mother, she was going to be a mother.

She couldn’t even remember her own. Will talked of his sometimes…Will. It wasn’t his baby. Perhaps if they could be rescued quickly and she could find him, she could still pass the baby off as his. James would understand although it’d been almost two months without a single spotting of a vessel and that would be incredibly unfair to him.

Her hand rubbed where she knew the baby would be and wondered what it would be like. She was going to get big and if they remained on the island, would he stand by her for all of it?
After a few more minutes by herself, Elizabeth dressed and found him at their shelter.

“I’m sorry,” James said and she noticed that he was clutching the rum bottle that they’d been working on for the last three days.

“No, you were right,” she corrected, coming closer to him.

“I know, that’s why I’m sorry,” he explained and she sat down just as he was in the small structure.

“I should have been a gentleman,” he continued and she laughed.

“My blame is as equal as yours,” she retorted although she realized that she wasn’t upset at him at all.

“I shouldn’t have let it happen. I should have stopped you.”

“Stopped me? James, that was precisely the sort of talk that made me not want to marry you in the first place. No one tells me what to do,” she spat and crossed her arms again, having taken out her anger on him when she was really mad at herself. Why did she let this happen? There was an uncomfortable silence that followed that outburst and she felt as though she should leave but she didn’t want to and James didn’t leave either.

It wasn’t how she envisioned the news of a child would be taken. Of course, Will had always been the recipient in those day dreams, but usually, the impending parents would kiss and embrace each other. Usually, the impending parents were married or at least courting one another. Elizabeth and James were neither…acquaintances…friends…two people stranded on an island together who gave into passion once?

She wasn’t sure what they were to each other and it wasn’t like she wanted him to kiss her…right? No, no, that was out of the question. It was an odd situation causing weird thoughts in her head.

“Your father will not be pleased with me,” he remarked and her laugh was joined by his.

“I wish I could tell him,” she said honestly because despite the circumstances, she knew he’d eventually be pleased.

“Someday…we’ll make it off this island and you will,” he spoke softly and his assured tone made her sad instead of happy. How could he be so positive? She tried to stifle a sob, but he heard her and pulled her into his arms. It felt so good. Tears came so naturally and she wasn’t quite sure what they were for, whether it was the baby or still being stuck on the island or her father or Will.

He held her and rubbed a comforting hand over her back as she leaned against him so her head lay against his chest. Her brown eyes closed and stayed that way for a bit until she wondered what James was thinking and tried to read his green eyes.

“Tell me something,” she requested, needing to hear his voice and wanting more of a reaction from him, something real. His thoughts appeared to be far, far away.

“When I resigned, I actually was…glad that my parents weren’t alive to know,” James admitted in a disgusted tone that became bittersweet as he added, “but times like this, I really wish they were.”

“How old were you?” she asked, gambling that he’d answer. More than a month had passed since he’d alluded to them last.

“I was fourteen when they all died,” he answered in a manner that she’d become used to, but she still hated hearing it from his mouth. She could still recall the first time she’d ever heard self-pity in his voice. After inquiring what the world had done to him that she’d find him in such a state on Tortuga, he’d replied, “Nothing I didn’t deserve.”

However, the way he phrased it now…

“All”? Who was included in all?

“I suppose that’s why I was so attached to your father…because I missed my own so badly,” James continued and she took one of his hands. Her mother had died so early in her life that she had no idea what it was like to have someone and then not have someone because that someone was dead. The absence of a mother hadn’t even been felt that often because the small family of herself and her father was so natural and familiar.

She’d only wonder what it could have been like had she lived when she was at a ball or gathering with others of her own age that were doted on by their mothers but she felt her father did that more than enough for her liking. Once, when it hadn’t been realized that she could listen to what was said, she heard a pair of old ladies discussing how it wasn’t proper that for him not to remarry, but she was glad that a new person had never been imposed on her.

They’d been quite happy especially after moving to Port Royal.

“I think you were like the son he never had,” she commented as other memories surfaced of her father speaking of James and the two of them together. His expression continued to be serious and she wished to change that.

“Perhaps he could have advised me on things,” the young woman suggested and watched for the expression on his face.

“You never listened before, why start now?” he retorted with a smile that she was pleased to see and she shrugged with her own grin. A coconut fell very loudly a few feet away and they both laughed.

“I don’t recall much of Christina’s birth as I was only three, I remember more of Emily’s when I was six, but Lily…Lily was the baby. I was nine when she was born and she never wanted for attention. We fought over who was to hold her and we’d trick each other over changing her which none of us wanted to do. Everyone loved her,” James said and his voice dropped again to one almost without emotion before almost breaking as he added, “She was five when she died in my arms.”

“Oh, James,” she whispered and put her arms around him. It felt good and she hated that, she loved Will yet she didn’t pull away when James returned her embrace.

A month passed as they tried to get used to the idea which basically consisted of not talking about it at all and she tried to pretend everything was normal as well as his optimism that a ship could come at any time. Their time was mainly spent in making repairs to their shelter as well as improvements, like moving a couple of rocks for chairs.

However, her back ached badly at the moment. Elizabeth sat against a tree and couldn’t help but grimace. It didn’t go unnoticed though.

“Elizabeth?”
Concern was very evident in his voice as he knelt down beside her.

“It’s nothing,” she tried to tell him, “My back.”
He tugged on her arm in a light manner so she knew to turn towards him. Her back ended up against his chest with her thighs against his.

“Do attempt to relax,” James spoke, his mouth so close to her ear that she could feel his words and it sent a shiver down her spine to her very core, “I can’t possibly make it worse.”

His hands moved over her shoulders and down her back as best they could since she still wore her shirt. She’d stopped wearing her baldric months ago. A strange thought struck her to take her shirt off. This was resisted as the memory of her back paining her ended except that it was replaced with the feeling of all the blood and heat in her body going to one place.

Her basest instincts wanted her to kiss him and take his shirt off and… Elizabeth closed her eyes to just focus on his touch and ignore everything else.

“Better?” he asked in a way that almost sounded like a growl which must have been her imagination.

“Much,” she answered with a sigh yet over two weeks, the feelings didn’t go away. Her body had become an enemy that instead of forcing her awake each morning with a distressed stomach, it wanted her to join with James again. It was out of the question. They couldn’t do that, she told herself which only made the fire between her legs worse.

She laid a hand on her abdomen that was over three months gone with child and tried to call on a higher power.

God, I know I don’t pray or confess as I should but I haven’t asked for anything since I begged for you to find a way that I could be with Will and I need you to remove these feelings from my body.

They had to be very, very wrong even though it felt so good in her daydreams and part of the memory from last time. She wanted him to suckle her tits, touch her and fill her. Her prayer didn’t appear to be answered as the week passed or not the way she wanted. This desire had only increased until she was unable to perform her daily tasks.

She could only watch as James went on with his activities and teased her about plotting something which was absolutely correct. After giving in to the feelings she could no longer fight, she wondered how exactly to jump him. Should she just kiss him? Grab him from behind? Surprise him at night?

No person or book had ever explained such a situation. She waited until they were seated very close together for their evening meal and before he had a chance to stand up after his last bite, she put her lips to his. He was surprised but returned the kiss until curiosity got the better of her and she slipped her tongue past his lips to see what it would feel like.

It was a long, lonely night as she slept in the enclosure and he slept on the beach.

Five days passed where she didn’t attempt a thing until it became unbearable again. James was bent over something at low tide. When she came closer, he held it up to be a strange brown circle.

“It’s a sand dollar,” he said with a smile and acted as though she should touch it. She was not so eager at that prospect.

“Go on, it doesn’t bite,” the once commodore spoke in a way that made him appear years younger so she did. The top was a bit slimy and the bottom was prickly. She wasn’t sure if she liked it or not as he set it back in the water. However, the happiness on his face was irresistible so she leaned up and kissed him again.

His lips were wet and warm and she pressed herself against his chest. Her hands traveled down his back, his were in her hair and she continued her descent until she was cupping his buttocks. James stopped and took them off.

“We shouldn’t,” he argued.

“But…” she countered and couldn’t help noticing the tightness of his breeches.

“It was a mistake,” the man refuted and stood up.

“But it felt good, didn’t it?” she asked in her best husky voice, “I need it.”

“Then, I’ll have to be strong enough for the both of us,” he said and walked away. Part of her wanted to go after him, but she resisted.
However three nights later, she saw her chance. She had slept in the afternoon so she was well rested when they lay down to sleep. Then, she waited until he just started to lightly snore and climbed on top of him.

James woke up as she kissed him because he sat up, but that only meant she was now straddling him. The crotch of her breeches rubbed against his cloth covered cock.

I like this story, and please keep writing! But, didn't Elizabeth have her period well after she and James had sex, and therefore she wouldn't be pregnant?

Thanks so much!!

As for her bleeding:

http://www.pregnancy-info.net/pregnancysymptoms.html

Implantation Bleeding
Implantation bleeding can cause you some confusion when you are unsure whether or not you are pregnant. It is not always easy to tell what is break through bleeding, or spotting between periods, and what is actually implantation spotting. The difference between period and implantation bleeding is that implantation bleeding occurs as a result of the embryo burrowing into your endometrium. However, because implantation spotting usually occurs right around the time you would be expecting your period, it is easy to mistake it for your period or as breakthrough bleeding.

Implantation bleeding signs generally include blood that is lighter than menstrual bleeding and is either pink or brown in color. How long implantation bleeding lasts will vary from woman to woman. It is important to note, though, that spotting in early pregnancy is not the same as implantation bleeding.

And she was so happy that it was lighter than normal...

Another great chapter. And is it my imagination or is James being sorta stand-offish since they discovered she was pregnant. Not that he ever was as bubbly or anything. And taking a moral stand is good, but it's a little late for that. A lot late actually.

I wonder how Governor Swann would react to the news? Would he be angry that James wasn't a proper gentleman or would he be pleased that Elizabeth is with the "right man" and not a lowly blacksmith?

And she still seems to be thinking of Will...

And will James be a proper father once they get off the island?

Off to read part 3...
