Tall Tales
“Wasn’t she the one who kept Odysseus as a sex slave?” Ianto asked, getting a smirk in return from Jack.
“There were several who did so, but yes, she did,” Jack confirmed.
“So, a randy immortal who keeps sex at their beck and call? Sounds like you, Jack,” Ianto commented, setting the book back down.
“Can’t help giving birth to a Goddess,” he replied with a shrug.
Ianto had to laugh.
“Are you trying to tell me that Calypso is your daughter?”
“Yes, I’ve told you about her,” Jack said, “Remember.”
The only daughter he’d mentioned was…
“Trea is Calypso?” he questioned, already knowing the answer.
“Yes, she is,” his lover confirmed, “that’s where she ended up after they took her.”
However, there had been an odd turn of phrase he’d used earlier. For being from the 51st century, it didn’t show often in his speech, but…
“You meant that you fathered Trea…you said you gave birth to her,” Ianto pointed out, so sure it was a mistake.
“No, I carried her for nine months,” Jack explained in a completely serious voice and still not looking at him, “and then I gave birth to her.”
By now, he knew when the man was joking and when he was not and this was one of those times when he wasn’t. He felt a bit faint and realized that he was on the floor.
“Ianto!” his boss cried, on his feet and extending a hand before Ianto had realized what happened.
“You weren’t kidding then,” said the younger man, accepting the hand and getting back to his feet. Confusion shown in Jack’s blue eyes when asking, “Why would you assume I was kidding?”
“Because…because you’re always saying things. We just assumed…one of the first things you told me was about your 51st century pheromones and I thought that was a crock of shit,” Ianto admitted as Jack pursed his lips. When he and Lisa had that scare, it was just a month or so before the battle of Canary Wharf and everything was going so well. Truthfully, he had been excited about the prospect of having a child with her and watching it grow up. He’d made himself believe he could have a normal life despite his mum. With Jack, he thought maybe it was for the best that they couldn’t naturally have children without having to involve someone else or adopting. Torchwood was a dangerous profession so he was like to die early from that or…or like his mum could have. Could he put a child through the same childhood as he had? Myfanwy was the closest they’d come to a child together yet when Jack held that little boy…
It wasn’t just because of all those people, all those voices that cried out because he hadn’t seen him in time, had allowed the flask to be taken and all those souls flew out except one. It wasn’t just that. It was also the way that Jack had held the boy in his arms, so gentle that Ianto wished for a moment that he’d been holding their child that way. No, it wasn’t to be. They shouldn’t yet Jack had just told him that they could. No, they shouldn’t. It wasn’t right.
“All those times, why didn’t you have me wear a condom?” Ianto asked because he had always been careful with his girlfriends. He’d just assumed after the few first few months that he didn’t need that precaution with Jack.
“I’ve been careful,” his lover replied and he wondered if he’d been taking birth control, “I’ve only been pregnant once and that was before I couldn’t die…I’m not even sure if I could anymore…”
Even though he’d decided that it was best that they not have a child, it made him sad to think that maybe they really couldn’t so soon after learning that they could. Ianto leaned his chin on Jack’s shoulder and proceeded to mess up his hair before kissing him on the cheek
“Meet you downstairs,” he said prior to exiting the office and walking into the main part of the Hub.

After a couple of more days passed, James found himself in Jack’s office being given a mobile telephone and keys to his own flat.
“Welcome to Torchwood, James Norrington,” Jack congratulated with a glass in his hand. The taller man put his new keys in his trouser pockets and the telephone in the inside pocket of his new suit before picking up his own glass. The five of them clinked their glasses together and drank. The strong liquor filled his throat as it went down and the smell reminded him of his father’s study. He set his back down.
“I don’t recall us drinking when I joined…,” said Gwen with a little lilt.
“Not when I joined either,” Ianto added.
“Well, I asked James on my own without his sneaking in with pizza or almost making me run him over,” Jack answered although the tone was playful.
“I did neither of those things,” Gwen protested, swallowing the rest and setting down her glass.
“That’s because Jack RetConned you,” Ianto mumbled and started sipping his. James and Martha watched as spectators as Gwen turned to their boss, “Is that true?”
“Standard procedure for people who come into the Hub uninvited…I hired you the next day anyway,” he tried to defend himself and poured a little more drink for her. She rolled her eyes and asked, “So, does that mean that you almost ran over Ianto?”
“Promised that he would…actually…,” said the youngest man.
“Well, you were standing in the middle of the road…”
“I had given up at that point, but I couldn’t catch a flying dinosaur all by myself,” Ianto explained and something clicked for James.
“Is that the creature that lives here?” he asked and Jack smiled.
“Myfanwy,” he confirmed, “and then we shagged…”
“We did not!” Ianto interjected as the women laughed, “that’s not what happened at all…it was another week or two…at least.”
Gwen and Martha laughed again and James smirked before it all became a little much.
“Do excuse me,” he apologized and exited. He had his own desk now. At first, he had a different desk, but it was Tosh’s and he’d felt weird about that so he picked a different desk. However, then he heard whispers of “Suzie’s desk”. It would seem that the Hub was full of ghosts even without an actual presence. He wondered if Martha had similar thoughts since she was using Owen’s desk, but she knew Owen and Tosh so maybe not…
His body slumped into the chair and it turned under him. It was a very enjoyable improvement to furniture. A sigh came from him and he touched his stomach. There was no scar no matter how much he looked…it was like it had never happened except he remembered. He remembered being asked by that creature and refusing. His sacrifice had allowed Elizabeth to escape.
Now, he was here and they were there. He was alive and they were dead…dead. They really were dead and he was alive. Tears started to come down his face and he wondered what had happened to them. Had their lives been long or short? What became of Jamie?
James wiped the wetness away and looked back at Jack’s office. Gwen looked for things, maybe she could help him.

“You know, I’m not actually a member, I’m still ‘on loan’ from UNIT,” Martha reminded Jack after James had left. The older man was silent a moment before turning his full attention to her.
“You want to change that?” he asked, taking a swig.
More than anything, she thought. It wasn’t as though she didn’t like UNIT, but Torchwood was a bit more fun, less structured…reminded her a bit of her time with The Doctor.
“Maybe,” she replied in a coy manner, “Tom will be peeved though…he’s under the impression that you’ll try and steal me away.”
“Rhys was the same way especially once they met,” said Gwen with a giggle, “but…I don’t think he’s so worried about that anymore.”
“Well, no fears there…I’m taken,” Jack stated and Martha looked to see a smile form at the edges of Ianto’s lips. It was cute and she nodded, “Then, I guess I’m Torchwood.” She was hugged by everyone and their boss explained, “We haven’t had enough celebration lately.”
Now, they all knew the true reason behind the drinking and it had been a good one. Sometimes, she still felt like she’d walk in and see Tosh at her computer or Owen coming down the stairs, demanding to know what she was doing at his desk. She drank some more and wondered what the Doctor was up to.
