David had received a 999 text from Emyr so he hurried home from class to see what the matter was. Before he had even opened the door to the flat, he thought he heard strange sounds inside. A high voice was singing loudly in Italian while he spotted Iefan running around with his blue dog behind him. Emyr was sneezing repeatedly to the side and David realized the singing was coming from Lucia. His mum must have mentioned something about the little girl staying with her mum.
"Shit," he spat when seeing Emyr's red, puffy eyes. He was clutching tissue in both hands.
"They have dog hair all over them...but he...but he...but he...(sneezes)...didn't have anyone else to take them," Emyr explained and sneezed again. He'd run out of his medicine.
"Take them out in the park and I'll go to Boots," David spoke, squeezing the other man's hand.
"Dobby!" Iefan screamed and wrapped himself around his cousin.
"Da-vid," he enunciated and Iefan said, "Dobby."
He rolled his eyes and Emyr laughed between sneezing. David went to leave but Iefan was grabbing onto his leg.
"Iefan, let go. Iefan! Stop it," David told him and was ignored. Lucia continued to stand on the couch and sing in Italian while Emyr blew his nose in a tissue.
"Fine, you can come with me," David said and Iefan let him go.
"Up," the toddler requested with his arms stretched out. David picked him up and his lips were unable to suppress an "oof." It had been a few months and he was heavier than he remembered. They certainly grew fast at this age. Then, another thought struck him.
"Did Jack leave the car seat?" David asked and Emyr shook his head.
"Shit," he complained because it wasn't just around the corner.
"Sit," Iefan said.
"Oh, I am so glad you can't really talk yet," David spoke and left the flat.
Finally, over twenty minutes later, they arrived at the chemist.
"No bob waga kuu," Iefan babbled in an angry way. He'd been complaining for the last ten minutes especially after David stopped carrying him.
"Should have stayed with Emyr and Lucia, they went to the park," David said and went for some water. Then, he picked up the pills for Emyr.
"ChooChoo!" Iefan shrieked and pointed at the Thomas toys.
"Yep, but you have toys at home," David spoke and picked him up, kissing him on the cheek. He cringed when he tasted peanut butter and tried to rub his cheek. After managing to balance Iefan while paying, he chugged down half the water before helping Iefan drink the rest.
"Here's the bad part," he said and looked at the boy, "We have to walk all the way home."
They found Emyr and Lucia in the park with tea. His fiance looked much better in the fresh air but took two of the pills immediately.
"I'm a queen and this is my garden," Lucia announced, pointing to carefully landscaped plants. Then, she pointed at Iefan, saying, "You can be my dog."
David prepared for a fight, but the toddler dropped to all fours and barked.
"I think I must be her butler," Emyr whispered and David smiled.
"You could always be my butler. I can think of a knob that needs some good polishing," David replied and Emyr almost spat out the tea he'd sipped. Instead, he choked for a moment.
"After the kids are gone," Emyr spoke after composing himself. Iefan came close to Lucia and barked at her.
At least he wasn't licking her like a real dog, David thought. Then, the toddler leaned up and licked the girl's hand.
"Eww!" she exclaimed and glared at David, "You did this!"
What? How could she...shit, his thoughts could only come to one conclusion. Lucia paused as if realising her mistake before pushing Iefan away.
"Stupid dog! Can't do that! It's wrong!" she screamed and balled her hands into fists. David rushed over to her and picked her up, holding her in place.
"What just happened?" Emyr asked.
"Oh, they just need naps. We should go," David said and Emyr seemed to believe him. It was utter bonkers what he had just seen. There had to be a reasonable explanation for it.
***********************************************************
The cemetary was just as Jack had remembered it. He set the red poppies against the headstone. A fresh bag of coffee rested on the stone as well. Jack traced "husband" and for a moment, wished that they could carve "father" into it. Things had always been the wrong way round between him and Ianto. They had sex first and intimacy later. It took Ianto's death for Jack to really appreciate him: his death that had been undone. Now, they were officially married without having exchanged a single vow when they were both living while his son would never be officially recognized as such.
"But at least you know," Jack whispered and tried not to think how long it had been since they had seen each other. Jack hadn't gone this long without seeing Ianto since he was pregnant with Iefan. It hurt if he thought about it too much. Selene tried to make him talk about it, but it didn't work. He knew she would make him talk about it eventually though before he'd be allowed back to work. Jack rubbed the cold stone once more and went to find Alice.
It had been his idea to come today. He'd been right in guessing that she had never been here. Alice' eyes were red and she wiped her nose. Jack thought he should hug her. However, she backed away.
"He would have been nineteen today," she uttered, "and I know...I know I shouldn't but when we dropped the kids off at David's and...I couldn't help thinking. He's Steven's age. What would Steven be doing now? Would he have a girlfriend? Boyfriend? Be at Uni? Working? Would he have sorted out the truth about you? Would..."
She shook her head and said in a lower voice, "would he hate me?"
"Alice," Jack uttered and came toward her again. She wriggled out of his arms.
"It's not fair. He's dead. DEAD! And I'm not and...and," she started and shook her head again. For an eternity, she kept her hand on her mouth before taking it away.
"And if he never died, I would have never had them," she spoke and rubbed her belly, "I never would have met Thomas or anything..."
This time, Jack took her in his arms and she let him as she cried. He was tempted to tell her the truth that he had chosen Iefan over Steven and Ianto. Jack doubted it would help the situation though neither would reminding her how David was only alive because Steven died or that Steven was in heaven. The hormones didn't help any of it either. As the sobs subsided, he asked, "Do you want to leave?"
Alice nodded before pulling away and composing herself. She kissed her fingers and touched the stone, giving it one last long look before they walked away.
That night, Jack waited until the other three were asleep before making the special preparations for the next day. He hoped it would help with what he and Alice were going through. At least, it would take their minds off of it for a while.
When he was finished, he waited upstairs for Iefan to wake up. After a fresh nappy, he bought the toddler downstairs where he didn't seem to know what to make of the basket with fake green grass inside. Iefan began throwing the plastic bits on the floor.
"No, not yet. Today's special," Jack tried to explain.
"Pakal?" Iefan asked and Jack had to pick the pieces up as Lula tried to eat them.
"Yes, it's Easter so the Easter Bunny left eggs in the backyard and you and Lucia are going to look for them," Jack told him.
"Why?" Iefan asked.
"Because they have candy inside," he said and Iefan darted for the kitchen. Jack grabbed him around the waist.
"Not yet, we have to wait for Lucia and Alice," Jack said and they sat on the couch. Iefan played with a plastic wand that Mica had given him. It wasn't long before Lucia came thundering down the steps with her mum trudging behind her.
"Easter bunny!" she yelled and went for the basket Jack held out for her. All four made their way to the backyard where both adults took constant photos of the search. Jack loved seeing the smiles on their faces as they explored each nook and cranny.
"I thought Rhi might be here," Alice commented at one point.
"No, she's back to not wanting Iefan to see her sick," Jack uttered with a frown, "even though he really misses her."
