I might have a weird shipping confession.

Spoilers for True Grit

I wanted Mattie and LaBoeuf to get together. Not right away, I'm not advocating pedophilia, but maybe running across one another again in a few years when she was 17 or so which would be more acceptable for the time period. I thought they seemed like a good match and really...if it was any other film and they were closer in age, their characters would have gotten together after their rocky start at first.

As it stands, Mattie never marries which I found disappointing. I suppose I should be happy that she was happy in her life without having to have a man around but...I'm not even sure she was happy from the evidence shown.

I didn't like the old-fashioned ideas that women can't be head-strong or have a disability and be able to find someone to share their life with. I suppose that's the fault of the original novel, but the rest of the film didn't seem so archaic in attitudes. Perhaps I'll imagine that she was hiding a female lover and wasn't about to take her along to her visit with Rooster.

I agree with this sentiment. It's part of why I love the movie, Benny and Joon. (Well, that and Johnny Depp is awesome in it)

Yes! Exactly, I own that one and it's good. It shows how difficult things can be but with the right people, they'll help you through anything.

This version of True Grit was more true to the book than the John Wayne version. Things don't always have a happy ending in real life, especially for poor Blackie, so I had no trouble with accepting the fact that Mattie never saw either of them again. It was a good movie.

While I agree, in general, that women do not need men (or anyone else) romantically in order to feel fulfilled, I don't think that was the right ending for this movie. I definitely don't believe that she was happy. Spending her entire life working and then the man who saved her life, took care of her... dies, and she doesn't shed a tear. Which I realize, she might not have for her father either. It certainly didn't seem like it. But that's hardly human, and just... definitely proves she was an unhappy person.

You're also perfectly right that in any other movie, Mattie WOULD have ended up with LaBoeuf.
