Title: Weatherby's End

Author: Erica Dawn

Characters/Pairings: Weatherby, Mercer, mentions of James, Elizabeth, the Kraken and Davy Jones

Rating: PG

Warnings: Angsty, very angsty and character death

Summary: Weatherby wants to talk to James about Beckett's plans.

A/N: I wrote this two years ago, based on the budget script. It is almost the same as I had handwritten it then.

Weatherby was about to board the ship when he took one last look at the Flying Dutchman docked nearby. Here he was, headed for England as he had wanted Elizabeth to do…it hadn’t worked out that way. Weatherby closed his eyes: remembering poor Hawkins’ throat slit in front of him…and Elizabeth…his throat tightened and his eyes were instantly watery.

It wasn’t what she would have done especially with what he knew. Beckett was planning a war. Surely, James didn’t know the extent of Beckett’s madness. He deserved to be enlightened. Weatherby looked around for Mercer’s sallow face, but couldn’t spy it. Then, he hurried, quick as he could to the Flying Dutchman. It was deathly still, but James should be there.

The deck was slippery like wood gets when it’s used to being under the water and in the middle was the capstan that Weatherby had heard about. Ever since he had heard the news of Elizabeth; his ears had perked at the mention of Jones, the Dutchman or most importantly…the Kraken. He knew Beckett had had the creature killed, but that was little consolation.

This capstan must have called the creature. It had its image carved into it. Weatherby shuddered at the imagined moments of what it must have been like; it was as if he’d failed as a father. It was the parent that should die first, not the child. He forced himself to look away and head for the stairs. The crew was clustered down below. Weatherby wondered whether he should prepare for a fight, but they looked at him with indifference except for one who appeared to have a starfish growing out of his face. He gave Weatherby a second glance as he walked around them. There was organ music from the captain’s quarters so James wasn’t there.

“Admiral?” called out Weatherby as he made his way farther into the ship.

“No, the Admiral had an appointment with Lord Beckett answered a cold voice; Mercer.

“No,” hissed Weatherby, but there was already footsteps heading for him. Behind him, Mercer already had his knife out. Something snapped in Weatherby. If today was the day, he’d go out in a way to make Elizabeth proud. He kicked at Mercer, surprising him before grabbing for the knife. They struggled before Weatherby grabbed Mercer’s arm farther up so that Mercer had a brief instant where he loosened his grip and a push from Weatherby sent the knife flying into the unknown. Weatherby had watched which gave Mercer enough time to push him into some barrels. He got up as Mercer grabbed a length of rope off the floor. Weatherby took two steps and Mercer kicked him, shattering his ankle. He hissed in pain while the other man took the rope in both hands. Then, Weatherby felt the scratchy coil wrapped around his neck and a little after that, he felt nothing.

Nasty! Wasn't there a part where Norrington found him hanged but they cut it from the film. Just as well.

Actually, the part where he found him hung was just in the budget script. The shooting script had a revised scene where James and Weatherby are told that Elizabeth is dead and Weathebry tries to stab the heart, but it was cut from the theatrical version.

I still want to see that one.

Nasty is right. I cheered when Mercer got his comeuppance in AWE.

And I am glad they cut this scene out of the finished film. It would have been almost as painful, no worse, than seeing Norrington die.

Poor Weatherby.

It would have been worst than seeing James die...because really Weatherby doesn't stand a chance does he? He's younger, crueler, and...Mercer.

Well done, Erica.
