Ready to Blow
Elizabeth dropped down with a thunk, swallowing a bit of nausea. Then she realized that he was a boy no more than five years younger than her and calmly said, “Parlay.”
“What is that?” he asked with blue eyes that were very big at the moment.
“You are the worst pirate that I have ever seen.”
It was truthful although she could see that it had hurt him yet it yielded the result she wanted.
“I’m taking you straight to the captain,” said the boy.
“Finally,” she muttered under her breath.
He took out his sword as she tried not to laugh and led her through the ship to the captain’s quarters.

Jack’s sleep was broken by the slamming of the door.
“You’ve been avoiding my presence!” accused a voice with such hostility that it could only be AnaMaria. After grumbling, he opened his chocolate brown eyes and sat up in bed.
“Who needs sleep? The captain certainly doesn’t, woken up during a nap.”
“Well?” asked AnaMaria.
“Yes, I have,” admitted Jack, instantly regretting it. What was it about her that he seemed incapable of lying to the lass?
“Why?”
“Your attitude has been less than courteous of late,” explained Jack honestly.
AnaMaria seemed about to protest, but his point was valid.
“I was fearful for it to happen again,” she said in a voice that was once again soft.
“Than I shall give you my word that it will not happen again.”
His first mate frowned at this and responded sadly, “Your word is worthless.” A slap would have hurt less.
“Then, what do you propose as a solution?” he asked. She hesitated before stating, “I can no longer serve under you. At the next port allow me to leave and we shall go our separate ways.” There was no problem with that plan that Jack could admit to and he suggested, “Your share of the treasure should be more than enough to finance a ship.”
“Yes, that should work,” she said, finally and held out her hand for him to shake. He did, but it was a long handshake where he touched the soft feminine flesh that hadn’t grown as coarse as his. They looked at each other and Jack gently grasped her shoulder, wanting more contact and yet not wanting to admit that he wanted more. He leaned ever so closer to her until their lips were only an inch apart. Then the door opened to reveal John, the damn cabin boy. AnaMaria broke from him hastily and seemed to flee.
“Captain,” started the moppet.
“How many times…?” started Jack, quite upset at things, before seeing Elizabeth, “Miss Elizabeth!”
“Mrs. Turner,” she corrected.
“You haven’t done anything to our Will, have you?”
“No, he’s in port as well. The Governor has this notion that pirates are after this new-found gold,” said Elizabeth with an innocent tone, but he knew her too well after the rum incident. She was never innocent.
“Well, that sounds very interesting, but what does that have to do with the Black Pearl?”
“I think you could be of some help,” said Elizabeth, determined as the wooden beams creaked above them.

Will couldn’t help but notice the sour expression on Norrington’s face as he walked down the gangplank onto the dock. Now that left Will alone to question the crew which was something that he had no experience with.
“We don’t wish to speak ill of others especially Luisa, but we saw it all,” said the large man.
The rest of the men wore saddened, worn looks and eyes were downcast.
“After the treasure was stored away, Luisa had gone below deck and we had no cause to follow her. In fact, we had cause not to,” continued the large man.
“What do you mean?” asked Will.
“Luisa and Marley knew of each other, uh…intimately,” he said, in a halting, embarrassed manner.
“Oh,” said Will, getting it.
“She came back several hours later with blood on her hands and wouldn’t speak a word. There was no question that she was responsible, but we wanted no part in more bloodshed.”
“If she has killed over the treasure before, then there’s little doubt that she won’t in the future. At the very least, she must be watched.”
“Do what you will, but do not interfere in our affairs. They are ours alone,” hissed the former pirate as a chill wind blew.
It was an unmistakable threat. Then there was the sound of pistols where Will had last spotted Norrington.
*********************************************************************
“What is the importance of this gold? Why is it worth killing over?” asked Elizabeth in the good dining room. She had already recounted everything she knew. Jack had only allowed himself, Elizabeth, Mr. Gibbs and AnaMaria to be present.
“The gold is almost not as important as the man who stole it from the Spanish,” half-explained Jack.
“Who was that?” questioned Elizabeth.
“Francis Drake, it was the only cargo that he ever lost in his career. His last plunder before being sent to Davy Jones locker in a lead coffin.”
“Spanish gold that was plundered more than fifty years ago and it was just lying on the bottom of the sea in wait for someone to find it?” inquired AnaMaria in an unbelieving tone.
“Covered by a hurricane only to be unearthed by an earthquake, the point is that it’s there and I intend to take it,” said Jack, curling the ends of his moustache.
“How did you come by this information?”
“A fellow pirate who I had not seen in quite some time knew of it.”
“An original crew member of the Black Pearl?” asked Elizabeth.
“Then you saw them as well on the Dauntless? Many people have worked aboard this ship and not all of them wound up cursed.”
“Your answer avoids my question, Jack.”
“I believe I’ve helped as well as I could, savvy?” said Jack, and stood, “The deck seems much more inviting right now.”
He went for the door, but Elizabeth stopped him.
“People are going to die and it will be on your head.”
“Pirate,” he remarked, getting around her and through the doorway.
“There could be civilian casualties.”
Jack’s pace slowed and he could almost feel her smiling behind his back as her remark did just what he supposed she wanted.
****************************************************
“There’s a body on the ground!” yelled a man as they reached the scene. Will looked frantically for Norrington and hoped he was still living. He had almost reached the body when there was a commotion to his left. Large crate boxes fell and so did Norrington along with Luisa. He had her wrist grabbed tightly with one hand and she carried a still slightly smoking pistol. Will could see that the body on the ground was actually the scarred man.
“What is this?” asked Rookwood, running over.
“I believe this woman tried to shoot me. I wasn’t witness to the act, but turned when I heard the shots. Then I found this man dead. He bravely gave his life for mine. She should be locked up right away,” stated Norrington in an odd way that Will couldn’t put his finger on.
“Fetch the jail-keeper!” cried Rookwood.
***********************************************
Elizabeth was clutching the side of the ship and wasn’t unnoticed.
“She didn’t seem so green on our last voyage,” commented Jack.
“She also wasn’t married or with child then either,” added AnaMaria.
Jack was taken aback by her second statement.
“Are you certain?” asked the older pirate.
“Not as certain as the tides, but she has all the signs for it.”
Jack had a thoughtful look on his face and Cotton’s parrot squawked, “Ready to blow.”
*************************************************
The jail-keeper came running with the proper shackles, but as Rookwood had his hands poised to take them, the jail-keeper announced, “Governor Grant was needed at a disturbance at another dock. He sent word for Commodore Norrington and Mr. Turner, especially, to come as quick as they could.”
The two of them exchanged perplexed glances and quickly followed an aide.
****************************************************************
“Give me the gold or I kill the lass!” said Jack with an arm around Elizabeth and a gun aimed at her head.
“Do what he says!” she screamed.
“It would be a shame to lose her and her child!”
A look of shock came over Elizabeth’s face and she saw Will by James and the Governor. She hadn’t wanted him to find out like this.

Date: 2011-03-27 02:25 am (UTC)What a shocking way for both Will and James to discover that Elizabeth is expecting a child. And now Jack wants to kidnap her for the gold? Wow, and to think I said that in my previous review that she might get kidnapped by pirates!! Not that I believe that Jack would ever hurt her, but it must put a lot of strain on Will and James. No doubt both men will feel guilty that they brought her along with them, as they did not know. And wasn't it Will who insisted to Gov Swann that she come? I bet he will feel just AWFUL now!
And why would Will believe the word of a pirate? The man said that Luisa went down with the murdered man and came up with blood on her hands. Well, the man is a pirate! He could say anything! He might have done it himself and pushed blame on her. Or maybe he just dislikes her. Who knows? The point is I don't know how trustworthy he is.
I think Norrington might know Luisa? That is the impression I got.
Could the scarred man been trying to kill Norrington and she saved him? I don't know why. but that pops into my mind. Maybe because he has a scar, which suggests he is a rough character? Of course, he could have come by it honestly.
Great chapter! Post more soon!!!
Oh, and was Anna-Marie Jack's first mate?? I thought it was Mr Gibbs.

Pirate quartermasters
Through a historical oddity, pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy elevated the rank of quartermaster to much higher powers and responsibilities than it had aboard any merchant or naval vessel.
Pirate quartermasters (quarter deck masters), like pirate captains, were usually elected by their crews. It was the quartermaster's responsibility to lead the pirate boarding party when coming aboard another ship. This was usually done from the quarter deck which was the place where two ships touched during the boarding attack. The quartermaster ranked higher than any officer aboard the ship except the captain himself, and could veto the captain's decisions whenever the ship was not chasing a prize or engaged in battle. The quartermaster also was chiefly responsible for discipline, assessing punishments for crewmen who transgressed the articles. Several quartermasters, notably Calico Jack Rackham, became captains after the previous captain was killed or deposed.
Although a minority of pirate scholars dismiss the accepted version of the pirate quartermaster's importance, it is well supported by the extant secondary sources such as Charles Johnson, Cordingly and Botting, and overwhelmingly borne out by the primary sources, including Ringrose, Dampier, Snelgrave, Trott, and George Roberts.
Long John Silver from the novel Treasure Island was ship's quartermaster under the notorious Captain Flint. He was said to have been the only man whom Flint ever feared.
Thank you for your reviews, plenty to think about.
