Minor

"I'm fine, just minor bruises," Jack spoke, dusting himself off from the tumble. "My center of gravity's a bit off."

He laughed which just infuriated Ianto.

"Minor? Minor? You're five months gone, Jack! You shouldn't even be out in the field!" Ianto complained, hands on his head.

"Yeah, what good does that do you both? Just makes it more likely you'll get hurt," Jack spoke and he was right, too.

"We need to hire more people. Tosh and Owen would understand..."

"Well, they aren't here, they're dead" Jack spat and Ianto heard that self loathing that Jack still had to work on. He hated that Jack still blamed himself.

"I know, but they don't have to be replacements. We aren't replacing them, but we do need people with similar expertise, like a medic? What are we going to do if you go into labour in the field that I can't keep you out of?" Ianto asked and Jack didn't look at him. He walked so he could take Jack's hands in his own.

"I thought you wanted the baby," Ianto added.

"I got the perp if anyone cares," Gwen interrupted, panting. "It was just a kid named Joel, he'd found some alien tech. I put it in the SUV."

They gave her a nod but Ianto wasn't going to let this conversation go. He looked Jack in the eyes.

"I do, I don't want to lose her," Jack confirmed and shook his head.

"Then, phone Martha and have her come here. It's a start. She could know people," Ianto spoke, "and we still haven't told her about the baby."

Ianto looked around to see if anyone but Gwen was looking. However, it was a deserted car park so he moved their hands over the bump. Dark clouds gathered ominously over the horizon and one stray cat was wandering the pavement.

"Maybe...maybe you could meet my sister...at least," Ianto spoke before he lost his nerve since he'd always been certain that Jack didn't want those sorts of entanglements but...they were going to be a family now. There was a definite pause.

"Okay, we could do that. We could drive up to Newport but we should do it before I get too big," Jack spoke.

"Of course," Ianto agreed and saw Jack hesitate before speaking again. "I have a daughter and a grandson named Steven."

"By Lucia Moretti..."

"You knew? Of course, you knew," Jack said with a smile.

"Yeah, but I was hoping you'd tell me someday," Ianto spoke.

"You could meet her since I'm meeting your sister," Jack said with a shrug.

"I'd like that," Ianto agreed.

"I'll phone Martha tonight," Jack promised and Ianto let him go, satisfied. Things were going to be fine.

"And then you could get married," Gwen suggested as the wind picked up.

"Shut up, Gwen," Jack said and rubbed his bump. At the same time, Ianto said, "Fuck off, Gwen."

Then, they all walked back to the SUV near the bay, passing the stray cat on the way.

Oh Gwen nice try on getting them married but that suggestion alone will not be enough.

Huh! Gwen's sticking her oar in again where it's not wanted. It was a private conversation, what was she listening in for anyway? It would have been the polite thing to do to pretend she hadn't heard. Nosiness annoys me, it's rude and disrespectful. (and I'm a grumpy old woman!)

Loved the conversation between Jack and Ianto though, it's so tentative and uncertain, but so honest =)

I thought it seemed in character for her...

Oh, I'm glad about the conversation, I'm always worried about stuff like that in my writing, thank you!

Yeah, Gwen is perfectly in character - I can always tell when she's written in character because she annoys me as much as she does on screen! I'm always wanting to tell her to grow up and learn some manners. *sigh* Like I said, I'm a grumpy old woman ;)
