Future
Ianto had his gun at the ready but they weren't sure what was causing the disturbances. Children and animals had been getting spooked near this particular area of woods near the bridge at Burry Pill. An ill wind passed through the trees and Ianto had a bad feeling he knew what they were facing. However, before he could make any sort of warning, the fairy lunged for him. It was trying to force the petals in his mouth although none of the reports had mentioned it.
"No!" Ianto yelled and kicked and punched with all his might as other fairies joined in.
"Why do you resist? You must desire death," one of the fairies hissed.
"No! I'm going to walk our daughter down the aisle!" Ianto screamed as he continued to fight them.
Another voice hissed and he recognized it as Jasmine, the girl they'd let get away the first time.
"You work for them. It's only a matter of time before you die. You're just on borrowed time."
Ianto felt as though he couldn't breathe and felt his eyes close. He thought he was dead until he realized what he was seeing. Still, he must be close to death but instead of seeing the past, he saw the future. Jack was in tears and then, he was clutching his belly.
Next, Jack was in the medic bay and everyone was shaking their head. The sheets surrounding his midsection were red with blood.
Sarah Jane was dressed all in black and carried a rose as she approached the casket and placed it on top. She started to cry and Jack held her.
It seemed to years later as Jack took an envelope from the mail. It'd been addressed to Sarah Jane Harkness-Jones but was unopened and delivered back to the return address. Jack put it on the top of a stack of identical letters.
A young woman stood in a hospital room with beds and monotonous beeping. Her nametag read: Sarah Jane but Ianto could barely recognize her. She looked so old and unhappy.
"Doctor, the therapy isn't working. They're still dying," a nurse complained to her. Her blue eyes were lifeless as she said, "Everyone dies."
"No!" Ianto screamed and it turned into coughing. He was alive and wet. Why was he wet?
"Oh thank God, Jack and Gwen would never forgive me if I got you killed," Rhys spoke and helped him up. "You took a tumble in the water and got some in your lungs."
Ianto was about to correct him but it was probably for the best. Rhys wasn't even supposed to be with him today but traffic and a series of accidents demanded it. Still, he couldn't help thinking about what the fairies told him.
They were right.
"You all right? You look peakish," Rhys pointed out.
"No...no, I'm fine. I just have to see Jack," Ianto spoke and Rhys nodded. Ianto wondered if the ride back would change his mind. However, with each passing kilometre, he felt more and more confidant of his decision.
No sooner had they entered the garage, did Gwen and Jack welcome them back. Ianto held him close and felt his bump that was still there. He sighed in relief.
"Ianto, what's wrong?"
"It was fairies. I'm fine but...Jack, I can't do this anymore," Ianto spoke. "After the baby's born, I should retire. I want to be there for them. I don't want to be dead."
Jack looked like he was about to protest.
"You know I'm right. Most members of Torchwood would have died by now and I want to see them grow up," Ianto continued as his hands stroked Jack's back.
"I know but I'm going to miss it," Jack uttered and Ianto nodded.
"Me, too," he agreed.
