June 6th, 2009, part Four

Last time, he’d driven this road; Ianto had been in the passenger seat next to him. He’d suggested that they should go on a mini-break when it was over and Jack had hesitated as he always had. As though he could drive Ianto away or convince him not to love him by not opening himself to him, not being honest…by being an ass this whole week. What he had failed to realize wasn’t how much Ianto loved him, but how much he loved Ianto so that it felt like a hole or a wound that couldn’t heal and when he thought of Steven, it was like someone throwing alcohol on it. Each time, he thought he’d steel himself the next time so there wouldn’t be a next time and he wouldn’t be hurt again. It never worked. He always let himself fall too hard, too fast and paid the price when the ground met him tough. Ianto was right to call him on it. This was just pretend he presented in order to survive. He was more than just the dashing man who flirted with everything in sight and acted as though nothing mattered. Except to his daughter, he proved to her that he was every bit the cold-hearted bastard she was afraid of.

His thinking was interrupted by music from the radio.
I feel stressed out
I wanna let it go
Let’s go way out spaced out
and losing all control

“I just have too many thoughts,” Gwen complained and sat back. This same song had been playing the day before last with Ianto. He’d been singing to try and lighten the mood.

Lets paint the town
We’ll shut it down
Let’s burn the roof
and then we’ll do it again.

Songs came and went and as the memories tried to come back, they ended up singing along together. By the time they turned onto Downing Street, they had no idea what was even coming out of their mouths.

We should have stayed together
Cos when you left me it stopped
They’re telling me
That my heart wont beat again
Wont beat again
Its killing me.

“10 Downing Street,” Jack stated and parked the car, “Stay here, call me if anything happens.”
When she nodded, he locked the car and walked up to the guard at the door.

“Captain Jack Harkness, the Prime Minister should be expecting me,” he announced and the guard nodded, pressing his comm. unit.

“There’s a Captain Jack Harkness here to see the Prime Minister,” he spoke into it and after a moment, confirmed, “Affirmative.”

“I’ve been ordered to allow you access, but I have to check you for weapons,” the guard explained and Jack relented. Not finding anything, the guard continued, “You’ll find him in the first floor parlor.”
This wasn’t the first time he’s been in this house and he knew where to find it.

“Prime Minister Green,” he acknowledged and the man shrunk back in the upholstery.

“We have no business, Harkness,” he spat and glanced toward the guard who did nothing.

“No, we’re going on a tour of Northwood together,” said Jack, sitting right on top of the papers in front of him.

“I have resigned. The Parliament wants my head and The Hague is investigating whether I’m guilty of crimes against humanity,” the old man said in a deliberate tone, “I have nothing to offer. You have nothing to ask of me.”

“You owe Torchwood. If not for us, someone would have discovered what you had done and then, you would have been killed without question by a horde of angry parents and you would have deserved it. You still deserve it. I could kill you right now and the guard wouldn’t do a thing because I have no doubt he thinks you’re scum, too, but I need you. I need your security clearance because a good man died because of your stupidity and I want to carry out his last wishes,” Jack spat because he had no respect for this man anymore.

The Minister pursed his lips and remained silent so the once con man scooted closer; practically on the man’s lap. His face was inches from the other. He wanted him to see everything he’d done.

“You have grand-kids, don’t you? Do they run to you and throw their arms around you when you visit? How would you feel if one of them had to die? What about your daughter? Do you remember when she was born? Were you even there? Did you ever hold her in your arms and promise her the world? Did you ever dry her tears when she fell and promise that nothing bad would ever happen to her because you wouldn’t let it?” Jack asked although he wouldn’t let himself cry in front of him, “Have you ever had to sacrifice your own grandson for the good of humanity? Oh, that’s right, yours would have been excused. Mine was left off the list as well. He would have lived, but…but there was no other way. I had to watch my daughter holding her dead son with the knowledge that I’d robbed her of ever knowing the joy of being a grandparent. She’ll never get to hug her own grandchild and that’s all your fault so you owe me…”

The man gulped, but he’d finally broken him. There was a familiar haunted look in his hazel eyes.

“I’ll come with you,” the Minister agreed and they walked out together. With the Prime Minister by his side, no matter how disgraced a man he was, Jack was allowed access to anything. His fingers flew over the keys until he found a tray marked in the computer as Scl1965. Then, he ran to the Prime Minister with one of the vials.and held it up.

“This is the antidote to the alien virus. Now, release the bodies,” Jack demanded, but the Minister held up his hands.

“General, get me the highest ranking official still here at this hour,” he ordered and they waited for fifteen minutes until General Oduya arrived.

“What is this? I was on my way out the door,” the man complained and glared at Green.

“This is the antivirus. You have a tray of forty-nine others just like it which gives you no reason to hold onto those bodies. I want number 14,” Jack commanded and stood to his full height.

“Ianto Jones, very well, the release procedures will take longer than you think. I’ll have the paperwork drawn up and you can return in the morning, Captain Harkness,” the General spoke, nodded and left without another word.

“Well, that’s that then, you can return me to Downing Street now,” Green spoke and started walking towards the exit.

“Did it work?!” called Gwen from the car as they stepped closer. With a nod, Jack explained, “We can pick him up tomorrow.”
A small smile appeared on her lips and he tried to replicate it, but it wouldn’t come. He’d rather that they were rescuing him from a prison cell than claiming his body…he wouldn’t cry, not in front of the bastard.

As soon as they stopped in front of number ten, Green jumped out and almost ran for the door. Jack dropped down the glass on the windows.

“Prime Minister!” he called and made the man stop in his tracks, “I want you to remember that little chat we had!”
The man’s pace slackened as he continued toward the house.

“What did the two of you talk about?” asked the woman beside him.

“China patterns,” he replied and heard her snort of disbelief. They rode in silence until she suggested, “Why don’t you spend the night? I know we don’t have much, just a couch, but you shouldn’t have to spend the night alone…”

She was right. He didn’t want to spend the night alone in Ianto’s bed. He wanted what he couldn’t have; Ianto spooned beside him.

“Thanks,” Jack replied.
