Last month, Mercy for Animals claimed, and the United Egg Producers confirmed, that "If someone has a need for 200 million male chicks, we're happy to provide them to anyone who wants them. But we can find no market, no need." so "Using a grinder, Head said, 'is the most instantaneous way to euthanize chicks.'"

Yes, since male chicks are unwanted, they are thrown alive into a grinder.

WTF??? How is this acceptable?

Naturally, I was disgusted. I gave up eating eggs entirely except for Ben & Jerry's who have all their suppliers certified humane by Humane Farm Animal Care

Even though the group doesn't specify this practice on their website, they wrote me back an assurance that they don't allow this practice from their suppliers and a suggestion on how to prevent this atrocity in the future.

Dear Ms. (my last name),

Because of the recent press by a humane organization about a large chick hatchery in the US, we have had several emails by concerned consumers like you requesting information about our program and I'd like to respond. Like you, I was appalled at what I saw on the video.

Egg producers that are "Certified Humane" do not engage in any of the practices you saw on the video. They purchase pullets from pullet growers when the birds are about 12 -14 weeks of age. The Pullet growers purchase them from hatcheries when they are about 1 week of age.

There is promising research on sexing embryos which would eliminate the current methods of male chick euthanasia. Perhaps the outrage by consumers to the practice of maceration will encourage more funding for this type of research so it can be developed as a viable alternative more quickly.

Perhaps you might want to write to USDA asking them to provide funding for this type of research.

Sincerely,

Adele

At first, I was good. I'm still pretty good, but I had cake last weekend. I felt bad about it so my mom pointed out:

1 Timothy 4

1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

6If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

7But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

Thus, I shouldn't be feeling bad about it as long it was my decision to have the cake and I wasn't pressured into it. It's also strange that this is coming from the same woman who used to try and convert me to vegetarianism by saying that by eating a hamburger, "You know you're eating one of Babe's friends."

As it happens, I haven't eaten any meat in over two weeks. It wasn't on purpose. It just happened that way. There has been one disappointment. After a month and a half of having no eggs and even less meat than usual, I weigh...exactly the same. I guess it's further proof that I need to exercise more.

On a completely different note, I hate how Paul appears to complain about vegetarians, but I LOVE how he complains about people who forbid others to marry.
Yes, I agree, forbidding marriage when two people are in love IS wrong.

O_O

They throw them into a grinder?! D:

I eat very little meat but I can't do the vegetarian thing. I'm always thinking about it, since I eat so little meat anyway and can go for weeks not eating any, simply because I prefer salads, meat substitutes (tofu, soy), and other foods that aren't so heavy, but every now and then, I just want like bacon or something. When I start even thinking about going vegetarian, I start craving meat and so immediately discard the idea of giving it up. Like right now, I'm about to go finish off that bag of beef jerky that I have.

It would be even harder for me to do it now because my sister is trying to follow a strict eating plan that involves specific amounts protein and she sometimes chooses beef or chicken instead of lentils or tofu and I'm trying to follow the same eating plan in order to make sure that she sticks to it.

I'm not used to eating as much meat as I've been eating, though. I have trouble finishing it all because I just don't really want it. I'm comforting myself with the thought that evolution says I ought to eat meat, so I force it down. lol
