“…But as we all know, CCTV footage can be tampered with. Was this Tosh’s doing? Is this why she always felt drawn to Owen, cos she’d screwed around with his only proof of what happened to Katie?? Nice one, Jack. Get your new team off to a flying start,” the man read and muttered, “I really hate that bloke, why am I even reading this?”
Then, he turned the page and remembered. There was Tosh’s personnel survey.
“…Notes about you: I came to Torchwood because it enabled me to do work that opens my mind further to the fact that there was more to learn about this planet, and others, than I ever thought possible. I am very grateful to be here. And I do wish certain people would leave my PC alone. It is not a toy!” Jack read and smiled, “She meant me and Owen.”
The next two pages after that were Ianto. Eight pictures were scattered among them; one of just him, two with Lisa and five from a security camera of his second meeting with Ianto. Too bad that first meeting wasn’t caught on CCTV.
“Do you know what today is? No, of course, you don’t,” he said, rubbing his belly, “Three years ago, on this very day; I met your daddy for the very first time. He had very tight jeans, a studded belt and he looked hot, but I didn’t know how important he would be then. We’d meet two more times before I started to realize that.”
Jack turned his attention back to the page.
“Ianto Jones – junior researcher at Torchwood One in London. Joined in 2005. Relationship with HR assistant Lisa Hallett (first love/lost virginity to?). Was present at the Battle of Canary Wharf – was one of only 27 survivors – what does that do to your head?” he read and shook his head, “He makes your daddy seem…”
He shook his head again.
“Ianto wasn’t like that. He had his moments, but he was one of the bravest, strongest men I ever knew,” Jack spoke, “so much more than me.”
With a push of the button, he turned the jets off.
“…My job is to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently for Jack…I probably know more about Torchwood, the Hub and this entire set-up than anyone else here, apart from the Captain. Actually, there are times when I suspect I know far more than he does about what’s actually on site,” he read and smiled before reading the next part, “In case of emergency contact: Rhiannon Evans. Now, that’s not her real name, but as long as I knew her real one, that didn’t really matter, did it? He was trying to protect her from being tracked down. It didn’t work, but he tried.”
He did like the second paragraph on the next page.
“Ianto moved on from Lisa pretty quickly, as he and Jack are an item – worst-kept secret in the world, it seems, except to other TW bods. Are they blind? I don’t work with them and I could see it a mile off,” he read and was able to smile at the good times. The next section was on Gwen; all four pages.
“Well, someone fancies Gwen…and what’s this?” Jack asked of one section, “With Jack being Jack, Suzie being the ice queen, Owen burying everything, Tosh being the ingénue, and Ianto being the OCD, she’s the heart and soul of the time.”
Stopping to empty the water out, he shook his head.
“That’s really oversimplifying especially Ianto,” he said, standing up, “Your daddy liked to have things neat and in their place, but he was not OCD or he never would have agreed to most of the things we did in bed.”
He set the book down, dried himself off with a towel that he dropped without looking and wrapped himself up in a bathrobe. Then, he couldn’t remember where he put that book.
“Now, where did I put it?” he inquired aloud and hated how forgetful he could be…it had to be from pregnancy since it was a recent thing. A trace of black was visible under the wet towel and he cringed.
“It’ll be fine,” he said, swinging the book by the binding to get some of the excess water off. He wanted to lie down on the comfortable bed. Instead, he turned on the complimentary hair dryer and aimed it at page after page.
“According to Ianto, Splott is pronounced ‘Sploe’. I think Ianto may have been lying,” Jack read and it was the first time he’d read that report in years, “Now, I wrote that before I realized something about him. I don’t know why he did it. I’ve tried to figure out reasons, but there’s no reason that explains everything. The bottom line is that…your daddy would sometimes lie; nothing…nothing serious, just stupid stuff like Splott or liking Abba.”
Now, he’d made his first lie to the baby, but if he could help it, their child would never know that Lisa was ever at Torchwood Three which created a problem two pages later.
“Now, just because I’m being quiet does not mean I’m hiding anything,” he said as he read this section silently. However, there was one paragraph in the section that would be fine to read aloud.
“Ianto Jones temporarily suspended from active duty, to return at my discretion. His love for Lisa clouded his judgement, and he made some serious mistakes – but I have to wonder if I would have done the same thing in his situation. Ianto’s personal needs and emotional state have been overlooked, I should not have missed something like this. During his suspension, I will try to spend more time with him. Hopefully, we can establish a closer working relationship,” Jack read and stopped. It was fact. He couldn’t deny it. His relationship with Ianto had begun in deceit and lust. Ianto had lied and seduced him while he had seduced him back and used him; shagging without really caring what made the young man tick or his needs. Hadn’t he said that from the start? On their second meeting, Ianto had asked, “I saw what they did at Canary Wharf. What am I supposed to do with those memories?” and how had Jack responded? He’d told him, “You are not my responsibility” except he became Jack’s responsibility when he hired him and he still didn’t treat him as such. Only during the suspension did he try and really get to know Ianto Jones. Even after they grew into something more serious, he’d still overlooked his personal needs as pointed out by Rhi.
Then, there was that first part…about whether Jack would have done the same thing. “You said you would fight,” the 456 had mocked him and he’d replied, “And I take it back, alright? I take it all back, but not him!”
In that moment, he could have given them every child in the universe if they would allow Ianto to live, but…but there was nothing. Ianto and Steven died and everyone else got to live. There was no question he would have done the same thing, but there was no glove, no nanogenes, nothing…he couldn’t bring them back.
He rubbed his bump. It was the only good thing that had resulted from this, but he couldn’t help imagining what it would have been like with Ianto. Would he have noticed the signs earlier? Would his lover have noticed something was different before he did? They could have used the Torchwood equipment to scan for the baby and the ultrasound to actually see it.
They could have listened to the heartbeat together and put together a nursery in the house’s extra room and talked about the names and he would have been there for the birth…
“But he’s not,” Jack muttered and felt the tears coming again. Instead, he had to keep it a secret and he hadn’t even had a chance to see the baby. He didn’t know whether it was a girl or a boy. Jack just knew that he didn't know what he'd do if he lost this last link with Ianto. It'd be like losing him all over again. With a sigh, he gave up on the hair dryer because he just wanted to be in bed. He read through more of the book, pausing on Estelle’s picture. Unlike Ianto and Melody, Estelle and Lucia were able to grow old and grey yet their experiences had been different. Jack had left Estelle rather than marry her and Lucia had left him rather than let Torchwood get their hands on Melissa.

Date: 2009-11-14 08:22 pm (UTC)Yes, I love that book so I'm glad you think I fit it in well. When I was reading it, I always wondered, What would Jack think? And then there were little discrepancies like Ianto's sister's last name...so I liked trying to explain that.
