You're probably familiar with movie reward cards. You rack up points from purchasing tickets and concessions until they give you free stuff.

I like free stuff.

Here's the problem:

My mom and I try to buy concessions now since that's how the movie theatres make money and we want them to stay in business...by concessions, I mean $3.75 for a large popcorn or $4.50-6.50 for a kid's meal at the chains.

She's wondering if we're being hypocritical by using the card and buying concessions...whether they negate each other. Plus, she's concerned about the amount of extra paper used to tell us point value, coupons, etc.

I'm sure some of you work for movie theatres or have worked or know someone who does.

What do you think?

P.S. Concert did not work out. I haven't done Ticketmaster in about ten years and I assumed they would be like the theatre chains...I pay online, then show up with my credit card and ID. Nope, I would have to print the ticket out. I don't have a printer, they hate me and I hate them, and the library would have been closed by the time I got off. I'm trying to be positive, there must be something even better out there on the horizon and it is a first-world problem...but it still sucks.

I don't think it's hypocritical.
Theaters make money on concessions, but they also get a tiny percent of the ticket for the movie. The more you go to a theatre, concessions or not, the theatre is making money off you. Plus, you sometimes get extra points for certain movies, usually huge blockbusters on opening day. That's a form of advertising where the theatre is getting paid to make certain movies seem appealing- so more people see the movie and it gets a high opening number. The free snacks are usually at a portion, and after enough ticket purchases, that the theater isn't losing out on anything when you use it. The free snacks are usually tiny enough that people who actually want something will either get more food or pay a little extra to get a size upgrade.
Plus, they're an incentive to remain loyal to a chain.

Re: Concert

I think you can still call the box office directly for the venue that you're going to and do Will Call if you prefer to pick up tickets in person. Just FYI for future concerts. It's worth checking out and probably depends on the venue. I'm personally waiting for them to catch up with Megabus and Amtrak and just let attendees show their confirmation number or barcode on their phones. nhft paper ticket thing.

As for movies, I'm clueless about that because I only go to the movies like twice a year (unless it's a special occasion like Star Trek or something) and I didn't even know they had reward cards.
