Since The Avengers, I've always wanted to try Shawarma but it's not the easiest thing to get a hold of. Then, I found this place:

It's right by University Mall! Unfortunately, they had no vegetarian Shawarma and while they had salads and vegetarian options for other things, my mom opted to bring her own sandwiches from home.
Now, I'm not sure how "authentic" my Shawarma was but this is what happened...

I was given the option of chicken or steak which already sounded very different from the Food Network's representation. However, since I can be very picky about my meat, I went for the chicken option. Then, he asked what I wanted on it. The selection looked very similar to Subway but I told him I had never had Shawarma before and wanted it how it was supposed to be. Thus, he gave me lettuce, tomatoes, onions, garlic and pickled turnips. Why garlic? He said, "This is what makes it Heaven." I can't argue with that. Also, my mom is right. Anything tastes better in pickled form, including turnips.

We headed for the University Mall Food Court.

I know, I should have been drinking power-c instead of glow to keep with the theme. The important part is the Shawarma and it was...SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!!!!!

You had the chicken and it was kind of chewy in parts but it had the spices and the flavor and you just wanted to keep going. Ambrosia, utterly, completely, I have tasted few things this good that weren't sugar laden. It was so good and so big that I couldn't finish it. I took it home for dinner the following night.

It kind of blew up a bit in the microwave. It still tasted good though.

I used to live in the Netherlands, and that is the late night drunkfood of choice - lamb shawarma or chicken shaslik, with french fries and garlic sauce. So good.

I keep wanting to try shawarma too! There's a place in the area but it's far enough away that I never feel like driving to it. Those pics look delicious.

When we saw the Avengers film, I remember being totally disbelieving that Tony would not have had Shawarma because it's one of those 'every street corner' things here, but yeah, seems like Australia is just one of those places. A late night kabab, 2am and drunk, is just about compulsory here. (Falafel!)

I... had not heard of pickled turnips ever being included in one before, but that is otherwise an awesome bit of food! Pity they didn't have a falafel option, those are so.good.

{You should reheat in a regular oven or quickly in a griddle, tho. A shawarma is like fries -- microwaving kind of radiates the goodness out of it.}

Mmm, I love-love-love Shawarma (it's all over the place here in Atlanta) and was totally craving it after watching the Avengers. Glad you got to try it!
