My Soul

In a recent post, I mentioned how Natalie Portman said that Dirty Dancing formed her soul.

I feel a bit out of it sometimes with Dirty Dancing. I first saw it as a teen and it was okay. The abortion subplot was very enlightening. I liked the dancing but...it didn't grab me.

So, I began thinking about...were there films that formed my soul and what were they?

It's an odd thought that entertainment would help make up your essence but I suppose if I had to name what helped form what I am today...

In chronological order to when they really hit me...

Time Bandits
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Chariots of Fire
Jurassic Park
The Lion King
Little Women -the book
The Original Star Wars Trilogy

Happy Birthday! Hope it's a great one -- all the best from a fellow sagittarius! :-)

Been thinking of soul-shaping movies, and there are quite a few that qualify, in one way or another. They're all pretty old ...

101 Dalmatians (the original animated one, it's all about love and devotion and not giving up fighting for what is yours)
The Bridge (A German anti-war movie, about young boys being made to fight in the waning days of the war; it leaves you without any doubt that war is NOT glamorous)
Judgement at Nuremberg (instilled me with a passion to address war crimes)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original, which gave me a permanent love of science fiction, and the belief that we could collectively do better)
Destry Rides Again (Jimmy Stewart at his finest, speaking of the virtues of non-violence, and when it is okay to take up arms)

Happy Birthday! I hope you have a blast!

I love that Chariots of Fire made your list. It seems very underrated among the general public.

I've been thinking along these lines for a little while now, and I think my soul-shaping works would be:

The Sound of Music
Sister Act
The Father of the Bride (1990s remake)
Adventures in Babysitting
Star Wars-Original Trilogy
The Ramona Quimby book series
The Great Escape
Chicken Run (which is a parody of the film above)
Lord of the Rings (the movies)

Honestly, I don't think any movie has done that, but I do feel like Star Wars inspired my inner geek, and Star Trek. Beauty and the Beast made me believe in love growing up. The Breakfast Club spoke to the rebel in me. Lol. The Sound of Music made me love travel and culture.

Most of my soul is made up of books, I know for a fact that they shaped my mind.

Jurassic Park is a good one to choose.

Things which formed my soul:
Pulp Fiction
Spider-Man
Harry Potter
The Lioness Quartet
Animorphs
Dracula
Everything's Eventual

There's probably a lot more, but those are the ones that stick out in my mind. They influenced my thought patterns and writing patterns a lot.
