Worries in the Dark
December 18th, 2017
Alice finished up stitching Faba in the morning after Tom had left for work. She had a sneaking suspicion that the plush animal wasn't made on Earth. As she made her way around the shoulder, the stitches disappeared. How did her daughter manage to rip it into two pieces like this? She didn't want to think about how much could be her grandfather's genetic influence. Alice felt normal and Steven seemed normal...but it was always a possibility. What if the new baby was more like her brother, like Iefan? How would she explain that to Tom? When she had fallen in love with him, she had liked how normal he was...almost dull. Now, it had become a possible problem. Instead of lying every once in awhile, it would have to be on a regular basis.
Alice remembered every conversation she had ever had with her father. She remembered everything, including when she told him how he embarassed her by looking younger. It wasn't the entire reason. Every time time Jack came, she would have to refer to him as "Uncle Jack". This had been her idea so she wouldn't have to explain to Steven or her ex-husband, but she hated it. She hated lying to her son and now, she would have to lie all over again. It filled her with dread. For a moment, she wondered if it was worth it. Then, she remembered him saying "I love you" and knew she couldn't send him away. Alice also wanted to know her brother. It still seemed cruel that he had to be blond though. She had assumed Steven was blond from Joe's side of the family. Now, that seemed to be wrong. If Iefan was blond as well, then Steven's hair color came from his grandfather and if his genes were responsible for hair color in one child, other things could show up as well. Could his immortality be genetic, too? If it was, why couldn't Steven have gotten it but then...that was the other thing...the thing she didn't like to think about.
She was relieved when there was a knock on the door.
"Mama, who's that?" asked Lucia, running towards the front door as her mum walked there. Alice was amost certain she knew who was on the other side.
"It should be your uncle and cousin," she told the little girl before opening the door. She was right. The real surprise was her urge to acknowledge him as "dad" when she saw him with the grin on his face and Iefan in his arms. Her mum had always warned her about that grin; that it could make people do things that weren't good for them.
"Come on in, I'll go get Faba," she told them and went back to her office. Maybe this second meeting would go better than the first. When she returned, they were seated in family room. None were talking. Even Iefan was making no move from his dad's lap. She rubbed her belly bump. It was large for being only twelve weeks along, but that was common in successive pregnancies. Alice hoped it was a good sign.
"What's Faba? I mean, really," she said and her hazel eyes locked on her dad's blue ones with that last word.
"A Flubble, I think they're from the planet Gallifrey where his godfather is from," he answered and it was what she was expecting. His godfather was another alien, which was appropiate.
"Faba!" Iefan screamed with joy as she handed it to him. Then, he squeezed the plush animal with all his might.
"I thought we might have a playdate with all of us tomorrow or the next day and you could meet Thomas," Alice suggested and he nodded with a smile. Then, she noticed Iefan with a glare on his face and he was looking at Lucia. Jack saw it, too.
"Call me when you have a time," Jack told Alice and after a moment of hesitation, hugged her with one arm.
"Bye...Jack, bye Iefan," Alice said as they let themselves out.

Rhi looked out the window at the valley below. It was impressive and a butterfly was flying close to the window. She rubbed at her back. The lower part was hurting. Maybe she had miscalculated her cycle.
"Rhi," said Johnny's voice and she turned around to see her husband with flowers she remembered as being from the vase in the hall.
"I got you flowers," he said with a smile and she laughed, taking them from him, "Mica is with Jack and Iefan at a coffee shop while David and Emyr are shopping...we're all alone."
Especially with Mr. Gruber checked out this morning, Rhi thought and looked at her watch.
"Johnny, it's four in the afternoon," she half-complained as she came closer.
"And it's Italy..." he pointed out before getting that naughty grin on his face, "Maybe we could go to one of those nude beaches."
She laughed again. He could always get her to laugh. Any pains were forgotten as she slapped his ass before kissing him.

Alice knew she was dreaming but it didn't make it feel any less real. She was four years old and running around her backyard.
"Missy, Missy, Missy!" her father called and she ignored him.
"Missy, I have a present for you!" he yelled and she still ignored him; stopping to look at some toads in the grass. Something she wouldn't have done then. No one else had existed when her father visited. It had always been a special time between the two of them...until that day when her mum had proved her father was different.
"Not Missy!" she yelled back, "Alice, like the book!"
"Alice then, come here," he said and she finally stopped to look at him. It wasn't her dad as she expected. His hair was silver and his face lined with wrinkles. He held up a small box that she took. The paper came off in her hands and the lid disappeared. Inside was a blue cloth rattle.
There was a whimpering sound and she woke up, expecting to comfort her daughter, but it was her husband.
"Thomas, Tom, amore mio, wake up!" she hissed and shook him until his green eyes shuddered open. For a second, they just looked at each other before he put his arms around her in a tight embrace.
"I had the worst nightmare," he uttered and sweat dripped off him. She tried to soothe him.
"What was it? Do you want to talk about it?" she asked and he closed his eyes for a moment.
"It was you and the baby. You had a boy and then...and then...it all went wrong and the baby died and then you did," he said and tears were coming down his face.
"No, no, that's not going to happen. Remember how easy Lucia's birth went? It was twenty hours, but still...if there would be problems, we wouldn't be doing this again. It's going to be fine. We'll have another girl and it'll be perfect," she whispered while holding him, "I love you, I'm not leaving."
"I know, I just...it felt so real," Thomas spoke, "A girl? I was hoping for a boy."
"Maybe we will," she said with a smile because she was good at smiling when she didn't really feel like doing it, "How about we have the playdate today and you can finally meet my...brother and Iefan?"
"That sounds great because you still haven't really told me a lot about them other than...than his being a homosexual," he said and she stopped herself from correcting him. Her dad wasn't a homosexual, but she'd rather not try to explain that unless it came up.
"There really isn't much to tell," she said, letting go. Why did he have to bring that up?
"But it's part of who you are, you're my wife, can't I take an interest in you?" Thomas asked, "You barely talk about your life before you met me and even less about being a little girl. Until a few days ago, I'd never even heard of Jack."
"Thomas, I'm tired. I need my rest, you know I do. We can talk about this in the morning," she said with a yawn. He frowned but shifted towards his side of the bed.

Mica lowered herself into the bath and sighed in contentment. Bubbles filled the entire space and scents billowed through the room. She had the whole place to herself for the next hour when her parents would come back with her brother and his boyfriend. Jack and Iefan were on their way to a playdate with Alice who was apparently Jack's daughter. Then, her mobile rang.
"Go away," she hissed at it. It continued to ring and rang as she tried to ignore it. She breathed a sigh of relief when it stopped...until it started again.
"Fuck," she spat and climbed out of the tub. Water slopped out onto the floor. She grabbed for her robe and slipped, falling hard on the tile.
"Shit, that hurts," she said and looked down to see it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Her knees were bloody but nothing appeared to be broke. Her mobile went to her answer box again. However, she made her way to where it sat on the dresser just in case. Within two minutes, it chirped again. She looked at the display and sighed.
"Sian, this better be good. I'm in fucking Italy, after all," Mica greeted into the mobile.
"Chris doesn't text me like he used to. What if he found another girl? What if he doesn't like me anymore? Is it something I've done wrong? I could change," her friend's voice babbled and she slumped onto the bed despite being wet and bleeding.
"Sian, we go through this every three to five months. One of you gets tired of the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing. You break up, moan about breaking up and end up back together in two weeks or so," Mica said and tried not to think about the bubbles that would be fading away, "and you don't you dare compare yourself to Bella and Edward or I'll hit you when I come back for being a modiot."
"It just feels different this time," Sian uttered in annoyance.
"Fine, I'm going to phone Chris but you can't make a peep or it's all massacred and he won't trust us ever again, cheers?" she asked and waited for an answer.
"Fine," Sian agreed. Mica ran through the options on her mobile, selecting one and hearing it ring.
"Mica! I'm amost not believing that you called! How is Italy? Have you shagged your way around the Mediterranean yet?" he asked with a laugh.
"There's been a few fit blokes but mum's got radar or something. She always knows when we're about to kiss and then she swoops in for the kill...or sends Iefan over. Nothing's a better mood killer than an ankle-biter playing twenty questions especially when you can't make out half of what he's saying."
Chris was laughing; a perfect time to start this interrogation.
"What about you and Sian? Everything still easy-peasy lemon squeezy?" she asked and sat up.
"Uh...no...I think we're about due for a break and I...I think it is too much drama for me. Sian and I are only fifteen and I don't want her getting thoughts in her head, planning our whole lives together or whatever," he spoke and there was a female gasp that didn't belong to her. Bollocks, she'd warned Sian not to say anything.
"Oh, good, she's been listening," Chris continued and she could picture him rolling his eyes, "Sian, I want to see other girls. I do not want you making this into some epic love story of all time. It's not. It was fun and now...not so much."
With that, he disappeared.
"Fine, I'll just be forced to see other blokes...ones I won't have to teach how to talk and don't still sleep on Star Wars sheets!" Sian yelled and hung up.
"Sian, you just hung up on me," Mica spoke but there was no one to hear her. She carried the mobile into the loo and set it on the floor near the bath.

There's a typo here ( silly little things):
Every time time Jack came, she would have to refer to him as "Uncle Jack".
