"I'm just surprised since Missy is a firm believer in marriage and family and you're her brother but..." Thomas spoke, "you're not also..." Jack crossed his arms. He knew he hadn't set the best example, but she'd done well with Steven. With no good response to that, he just shrugged his shoulders. Alice stood up with one hand rubbing her belly.
"How about we all go downstairs and open the presents?" she suggested.
"I think that's a great idea," Rhi agreed and stood up, too.
"Presents!" Lucia explained, jumped up and ran down the stairs.
"Careful!" Alice yelled after her and pushed in her chair. Iefan was standing up and looked like he was about to leap again before Jack took him in his arms. Rhi gave him a smile that made him feel a little better.
"If anyone asks, I'll be in the loo," she told him and he nodded. Downstairs, everyone was back on chairs and the couch.
"Where's Rhi?" Alice asked.
"Bathroom," he told her. She frowned and put a wrapped box aside. Jack went to the bag he'd brought earlier and took out the smallest of the presents. He handed it to Alice, saying, "Happy Christmas."
Her hazel eyes glimmered in the light and she sat down. The wrapping paper was removed to reveal a small jewelry box. She popped it open to find a gold ring with diamonds and three large Aquamarines. Thomas put an arm around her and leaned over as she gasped. Tears started coming down her face and he wondered if he had chosen the wrong thing after all.
"That's your birthstone, isn't it?" he asked and reached on a side table for a tissue.
"It is, and Lucia's and..." she paused and he was curious how she would continue, "it's just beautiful..."
They both knew who the third stone belonged to and she tried wiping the tears away. Thomas leaned close to her and used the tissue on her face. Then, he kissed her on both cheeks.
"Thank you, Jack," she uttered and he nodded. Thomas kissed her again on the lips in almost a possessive way.
"We got you guys something, too," Mica said and held up a long, thin box. Thomas took it but Lucia asked, "Can I open it? Please?"
"Sure, princesa," he said and handed it over.
"Oh, good, I haven't missed it," Rhi spoke as she walked into the room.
"Chocolate!" the girl cried and smiled. She went to open the container and pilfer one when her dad stopped her.
"Not tonight, you had much already," Thomas said, "why don't you get Iefan's gift?"
Lucia hesitated and both her parents had to nod at her before she moved to the blue wrapped present. Jack wasn't sure the toddler had could take it from her. He was half-asleep on Jack's lap.
"Thank you," Jack said and took the box, "Iefan, wake up! Present!"
His son perked up for a second and swiped at the paper.
"Here, I'll help," Jack told him and they unwrapped it together. In a matter of moments, the enclosed box appeared.
"Doggy!" Iefan screamed and seemed more awake. Everyone laughed especially Jack.
"Open," the toddler requested and looked up at Jack with a pleading face. He took the box and opened it to pull out a wooden toy with wheels. It was a blue dog with a string to pull it along. Iefan slid down and grabbed the string so it fell on the floor. It clattered and the toddler paused.
"Oops," he said and righted the dog with a careful hand. He patted the dog's head and apologized. Then, he started walking around the room as the adults in the room took pictures. Lucia began to meow as though she was a cat and ran after him. They ran around for several circles before Mica sprung and grabbed Lucia.
"Got you," she said with a grin although Lucia struggled and snarled like an angry cat.
"I'll take you to the animal home," Mica threatened and Lucia stopped. She let her go and she ran to Thomas to sit on his lap. Jack rubbed his hand along the soft cloth of the chair as Alice stood up with a small box. Iefan climbed back up on Jack with his new dog.
"Swing me," he said and Jack shook his head.
"Not now," he said before Alice gave him the box. It was a little bigger than the jewelry box he had given her. He undid the ribbon and took the box apart. Inside was a disc that didn't look like the ones he was used to, but it held a picture of Alice with a smile and a title, Family Movies. This couldn't be what he thought it was...he looked up at her and she was biting her lip. He had thought she'd left everything behind, but maybe this hadn't been the case at all. Lucia had an old film camera she liked using on their small daughter. However, he hadn't seen the finished products in years and had never banked on being able to see them again.
"What is it?" Thomas asked, "She wouldn't tell me."
"It's home movies from when she was a little girl," he explained and held it up, "on a dvd."
"Actually, it's a Blu-Ray," Alice told him and he gave her a confused expression.
"What's that?" he asked and heard snickers from the room.
"It's like a DVD but different. You have to have a special player for it," Mica said. Why did they have to come up with new things while he was away?
"Do I have that?" Jack asked her.
"No," Mica and David said together and shook their heads. First, he had to get this new thing before he could even watch the blue DVD thing.
"They can help you buy a good one," Rhi told him and nodded towards the teenagers. While they were discussing this, he noticed Lucia was looking in the bag at the remaining presents. There were three; one that was pretty large, one that was small and another that was very small.
"Would you like your present now, Lucia?" he asked with a grin.
"Yes!" she yelled and jumped up and down. He took out the large present and handed it to her. The girl had wrapping ripped off in less than a minute.
"Dollhouse!" she cried with happiness and showed her parents.
"Playmobil Modern Villa," Alice read off the package, "so it should fit with some of your other stuff. Now, what do you say?"
"Grazie," she said and started tearing the box apart. When she had managed to dump all the pieces out, Jack took out a very small box. It was the same size of the one that Alice had given him. He handed it to Thomas, saying, "This is for you."
"Grazie," he told him and opened the box. He seemed pleased that Jack had given him something as he undid the paper and opened the box. It was a photo of Alice as a little toddler in a fancy dress with a huge smile.
"Melissa's first birthday," Thomas read off the back and Alice stared with a hand to her mouth. He had thought about giving it to her, but when she said that she had tried to leave her past behind her, he doubted that her husband had even seen pictures like this one. It had been the only picture he had of her. However, he hoped there would be many more pictures to come and she had given him the home movies.
"Just like a princesa," Thomas said and held it up, "Look at mama, Lucia. Isn't she pretty, no?"
"Very pretty," Lucia agreed and Alice just smiled while wiping her face again.
"Of course, now she more than pretty, she's beautiful," he spoke and kissed her on the cheek.
"I have another present," Jack spoke and took out the last gift. He handed it to Alice who read, "For the new baby."
Thomas watched her open it and they smiled at the contents. It was a baby journal he had found online.
"Grazie," Thomas said as Alice said, "thank you. Actually, we have something for Rhi and her family."
She picked up the box from earlier and handed it to Rhi. Jack wondered what it could be. In a few minutes, it was revealed to an Italian crystal bowl with handstained multi-colour leaves. Something was written on the bottom.
"What's 'sogni' mean?" Johnny asked while looking at it.
"Dreams," Alice said with a smile. It was really thoughtful.
"Thank you so much, it's beautiful!" Rhi exclaimed and the others nodded.
